How do I stop other accounts from sharing files to me in OneDrive

Hi,

Yesterday I got notification in OneDrive app that someone shared a file with me, which was a PDF file that felt like malware or a virus (I didn't open the file). I reported the file, the account got banned but today I started to get more file share spam from multiple accounts. I'm wondering if I can somehow disable receiving files from other people on OneDrive temporarily because this is really annoying.

I can't even delete the files. Are there any plans to make it so I can stop people from sharing files to me or am I going to have to switch to google drive ? This is ridiculous. I'm getting porn ads. I hope you get class actioned.

Microsoft - you guys need to fix this immediately. My wife is getting porn shared with her unsolicited constantly. I don't understand why she is being targeted specifically when there are multiple users on the same family block, but she is. We have been paying for Office 365 for years now, so I don't want to just receive feckless instructions on how my wife can waste hours of her day deleting and reporting spam. That's a job, we already work full time jobs, we don't need to work extra jobs for free on your behalf.

Since Nadela loves AI so much, how about you guys put Copilot to work for yourselves to solve this problem for everyone? Yes that's a backhanded joke, I am software developer, I know this isn't possible.

This is what's happening:

Daily, she has to go through her share and one by one and delete numerous unsolicited shares for porn.

You should have a multi select, and delete all feature, that's a relatively quick fix. Get it done.

When she tries to report the offenders, she gets an error from your website, and apps always.

Don't tell your customers to perform an action that isn't working. This is ridiculous.

I have had this experience too often with Office 365 web where you website just doesn't work.

Sounds like you guys have work to do. I will remind you I am a paying customer so my feedback for lack of service is warranted here.

All too often I am also greeted with "Sorry this action can't be completed right now, here's a GUID".

Well you all should be recording those GUIDs somewhere, get one of your many offshore developers that you love so much to do the grunt work of combing through the logs to find the pattern. Then hand it off to a competent developer to do the actual work.

There has been a notable decline of quality from Microsoft for years now, I am not shocked that you offshore important things, just disappointed. Again, I am a paying customer. Don't reply to this with "Here's what you could do." I am not interested, I want to hear when this will be fixed. Maybe get a competent team of developers together with one or two PEs to solve the issue.

I will paint the picture clearly for you:

You guys borked OneNote too many times for me, I switched to Obsidian, couldn't happier.

You guys continue to slopify Windows, moved to Linux, couldn't be happier.

You guys have a corner on Office Productivity apps, welp most people are held hostage because of this, but it won't stop me from discontinuing use of OneDrive. There are options out there to produce your own private cloud storage, I just haven't put in the effort to move yet, but I will because I am tired of this crap.

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how frustrating it is to receive unwanted or suspicious file shares. You did the right thing by not opening the file and reporting it. While OneDrive doesn’t have a single option to block all incoming shares, there are steps you can take to reduce the impact.

First, you can turn off share notifications in OneDrive settings. This won’t stop people from sharing files, but it will prevent those alerts from popping up and distracting you.

Second, remove any unwanted shared files from your “Shared with me” section and use the “Report abuse” option when you do. This helps keep your view clean and signals Microsoft to take action against spammers.

Third, block the sender’s email address in Outlook or your Microsoft account. This will stop email notifications from those accounts and reduce spam exposure.

Last, if you’re using a work or school account, ask your admin to review external sharing settings in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. They can restrict or disable external sharing entirely, which is the most effective solution in organizational environments.

Thanks for the answer. I'm gonna just turn off the OneDrive notification for a while and see if the situation resolves on it's own.

It's a real bummer that there's no option to stop people from sharing files to you, I would really love to see that implemented because it's a huge security risk.

This doesn't help because it doesn't show the sender's email address in OneDrive. The files also never hide. It just shows an error Couldn't remove file from shared list. The Provided Item ID is not valid

How do you permanently delete the shared file from the shared section of your Onedrive account? When you select the file there isn't a delete option in the toolbar at the top, and there isn't a delete option when you click the three dots beside the file.

This is a real issue, I am getting an average of twenty files on my OneDrive everyday, it seems Microsoft is not interested in resolving this issue.

Once more Microsoft doesn't care but will when it becomes an epidemic. I can't believe there are no options in OneDrive like delete file or stop sharing or opt-out of sharing...not even antivirus check, at least not that I'm aware of! This is sickening, so many files every day and I'm supposed to spend time of my day to report each and every one of them and then delete them...which I can't even DO!!! They're either non-reportable (for lack of a better word) or there's some error when I try to delete something!!!

OneDrive sucks... I'm really disappointed at how Microsoft doesn't do anything for those senders and/or add a damn line of code so we can at least block them after reporting them! It's outrageous!

I have the same problem. I've started trying to delete several hundred unwanted files but it is very time-consuming, and a small number of files come up with a 'cant delete' message. This seems to be a problem at a scale that needs system capability to do the deletions in bulk. Does anyone know if Microsoft are working on such a solution? If they aren't, they should be.

I'm getting the same thing. Multiple shared SPAM files daily and I don't have the time to hide from shared and report a concern as it seems Microsoft is doing nothing to help. What is the plan Microsoft? Is there one?

This is useless information. Doesn't work. What is the point in reporting as spam or reporting a concern when you do absolutely nothing? Also, even hiding it from shared folder does nothing because it restores itself!

That would help if you could actually report and not just get a message saying "unable to process request" or just "error". Or the fact you can't delete them as it keeps saying its unable to do that either.

As others has pointed out this a huge concern that anyone can just share a file to you that can be accessed by any computer or device that is connected to the account.

I understand Carlo Luna is probably just giving the advise they were told to give, but this answer is not helpful. It treats the symptom, not the cause. This probably won't make a difference to anyone but I'm going to delete OneDrive and switch to Google. There may be problems there too, but who knows. Doubtful it's worse than this.

So...the solution is to get OneDrive for Organizations (Work/School) in order to have the ability to disable "Share with me" from random emails that are NOT on my contact list.

The option to block sharing is not available for personal accounts, only for work and school accounts.

If so, I can't find any doc for such an option. Admins can restrict their own org's sharing to external or other tenants.

I would suggest that you start a new thread using the "Ask a question" button at the top of this page to create a new Question and include the details for this specific query.

This provides much higher visibility to your issue than adding on to an existing post, which is only seen by people who are already following this question.

Thank you @Hornblower409 for supplying these links I have written my own blog post and a LinkedIn post to see if I can get more support for this. I am very upset about this and Microsoft's inaction is disgusting. This is not a self promotion, just sharing where I did it here, just in case people want to encourage Microsoft to maybe do something about this on LinkedIn too.

I just discovered I have over 100 porn .pdf documents shared to my OneDrive that I never asked for and don't want. There is no option that allows me to delete them. I can "report a concern" but I have to do that with each file individually. There is no option allowing me to check all of them and report them. I am very upset and frustrated by this. I will be contacting a lawyer due to the callous disregard by Microsoft allowing the intentional infliction of emotional distress upon me. There is no reason I shouldn't be allowed to delete things I don't want shared with me.
