Unable to "Save a copy" any more

Various users within our organisation have advised they are unable to "create a copy" of any document within SharePoint/OneDrive.

They use the web version of Word/Excel/File Explorer and usually go "File" then "Save a copy" on a variety of templates they use daily to duplicate the document to a location of their choice.

Since yesterday this is resulting in the following error "there was a problem creating a copy of this file. Please try again in some time." This only happens when creating a copy to a location other than its own directory (which works fine).

I thought it might be permissions related or file path/name related so I tried the same using my own Microsoft account with the same templates and it's doing the same.

Anyone else also started experiencing this issue recently?

    Hi All,

I experienced the same issue - I raised a ticket with microsoft and we ran a diagnostics with an expert. It was clear that this issue is to do with Microsoft and they are going to raise it with the developers team to investigate. It's encouraging to know that the time line of the issue is the same from all the comments that I've seen so far. This issue seems to affect those who have Microsoft 365 E3 licence. I'll give an update once I receive a resolution.

    Dear all

I have checked the Microsoft 365 Service Health dashboard, and a new incident has been reported regarding the “Create a Copy” functionality in Microsoft 365 web apps. Please find the details below:

    Incident Status: Active

    Tracking ID: OO1202986

Summary of Impact:  Some users may intermittently be unable to use the “Create a Copy” feature in Microsoft 365 web apps. The issue occurs when users attempt to select a location different from the default, resulting in an error message. The impact is intermittent, and retries may succeed.

Impact Start:  Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 12:00 AM UTC

Current Status: Ongoing, not yet resolved

Scope of Impact:  The issue affects less than 50 percent of users attempting to use the “Create a Copy” function in Microsoft 365 web apps, particularly when choosing a non-default location.

Action Taken:  Microsoft is investigating the issue by collecting diagnostic data and reviewing the recent deployment that introduced the compatibility problem. They are considering rolling back the deployment or implementing a new code change to resolve the issue.

Contributing Factors:  A recent deployment to the Word web experience introduced a compatibility issue between various Microsoft 365 web apps, preventing the “Create a Copy” functionality from working as expected.

Next Steps:  The Microsoft team will continue reviewing the offending code to develop a remediation plan. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, with the next update scheduled for Wednesday, December 23, 2025, at 4:00 AM UTC.

I understand this may cause inconvenience and appreciate your patience while Microsoft works on a resolution.

Your understanding and patience is highly appreciated. I'll keep monitoring the issue and will update you all with the latest information from Microsoft.

    Warm regards.

    • The fix for PowerPoint is in the final stages of deployment and is expected to complete shortly.

    Workarounds Remain Available:

    • Retrying the action may succeed.
    • Alternatively, use OneDrive or the Copy to feature in SharePoint to duplicate files.

Next Steps: Microsoft will continue monitoring the rollout of the PowerPoint fix and provide confirmation once full resolution is achieved.

I appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience caused. I'll keep following the incident and update the report.

    Hello @Alex Nache

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Community!

Thank you for reporting the issue where the “Save a Copy” function in Office for the web (Word/Excel) is failing with the error message: “There was a problem creating a copy of this file. Please try again in some time.”

To assist you effectively, I need to gather more details about the environment and the conditions under which the problem occurs:

    • Does this issue affect all users in your organization or only specific individuals?
    • Are both Word and Excel impacted, or is it limited to one application?
    • Please confirm the exact steps taken before the error appears. For example: Open document in Word for the web > File > Save a copy > Select a different SharePoint site or OneDrive folder > Error message displayed.
    • Does the error occur when saving to a different folder within the same site, or only when saving to a different site or OneDrive location?
    • Which browsers have been tested (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)? Have you tried clearing cache or using a private/incognito window?
    • Is the issue reproducible on different networks or devices?

While I investigate, please consider the following alternatives to maintain productivity:

    • Navigate to the document library, select the file, and choose Copy to. This method often succeeds even when the Office web “Save a copy” feature fails.  For more details: Move or copy files in SharePoint - Microsoft Support
    • From Word or Excel for the web, select Open in desktop app, then use File > Save As to save the document to the desired location.
    • As a workaround while waiting for a fix, try downloading a copy of the file from the web application and manually uploading it to the target folder or site.

Once I have your confirmation, I can determine whether the issue is related to tenant configuration, library constraints, or a current service-side problem.

Thank you for your cooperation. I look forward to your response.
