Excel Web fails while executing: File > Create a Copy > Create a copy online.

Error:
Copy could not be created. There was a problem creating a copy of this file. Please try again in some time.

  • The file being copied has been opened via an "everyone with the link can view" link created in a personal Outlook account. Specifically, this file:  https://1drv.ms/x/c/08eb2a76c904b8dc/IQCMrEsP03QDRLPI3ksnaDAuAcRx6UwKOTx7GlYUYHCIPRs
  • The account that tries to make the copy is also a personal Outlook account.
  • After clicking "Create a copy online" a spinner occurs for 5-7 seconds, then this is shown:

  • Clicking on the "Shared" or "My files" icons corrects this first error, the files are shown and the "Save Here" button activates. (However, only in "My files", why is then "Shared" the default?)
  • After clicking "Save here", this error appears:

  • The copy cannot be saved.
  • This appears to be reported by multiple people for Corporate office installation. This report is for a private office account. Related reports:

  • The above is observed in Firefox 146.0 on Windows.
  • On Edge (143.0.3650.80) it does not even get that far. After clicking "Create a copy online" the spinner that lasted 5-7 secs on Firefox (bad enough remains forever. Screen shot:

  • Browser restarts, cache cleans, etc make no difference.

The error you are encountering when trying to create a copy online in Excel for Web may be related to permissions or account issues. Since you mentioned that the file is opened via a link that allows viewing by everyone, ensure that the account you are using to create the copy has the necessary permissions to edit or create copies of the file.

Additionally, if the account is a personal Outlook account, there may be limitations compared to business accounts, especially regarding file sharing and collaboration features.

If the problem persists, consider the following steps:

    1. Ensure you are logged into the correct account that has permissions to create a copy.
    2. Try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache.
    3. If possible, attempt to create a copy using a different browser or device.
    4. Check if there are any service outages or issues with Excel for Web that might be affecting functionality.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to consult Microsoft support for further assistance.
