Office Home & Student 2021 (one-time purchase) will not activate on Mac - "No License Found"

I purchased Office Home & Student 2021 as a one-time purchase. It appears under "Products You've Purchased" on my Microsoft account. I have only ever installed it on one device, my Mac, and I have no Microsoft 365 subscription (current or expired) on this account.

On Oct 22, 2026, Word began opening my documents in read-only mode with this message: "Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application." When I try to activate, I get: "No License Found. Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application."

Details:

  • Word for Mac version 16.114 (26102031)
  • macOS 26.6.2 (fully updated)
  • Installer used: Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26102031_HomeStudent_Installer.pkg

What I have already tried:

  1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office
  2. Ran the Office License Removal Tool, restarted, and re-downloaded the installer
  3. Updated macOS and restarted
  4. Attempted activation with my only Microsoft account

I have seen other users report the same error on Word 16.114 since support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026. Microsoft's own moderators have said that end of support does not turn a perpetual license into a subscription, and that Microsoft Support can verify or reset the activation association when the license is not recognized.

I've been in an endless loop of robots on the phone and online, none of them are able/willing to escalate to a human, and none can provide me with the solution to this problem.

Other users seem to have the same problem:

I paid for a perpetual license and expect to be able to use it. What do I do?

Please uninstall your Office apps. You actually have 16.114.1 installed, not 16.114. They are not the same.

Then install this slightly older version 16.114: https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26101123_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg?atp=ets

After that, open any Office app, such as Word or Excel. From the top menu, select Help > Check for Updates. When Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, uncheck Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date, then confirm by clicking Turn Off.

That should work.

Fair enough, Emily, but it's Microsoft's AI that used the term "workaround," not me.
