Visio Dark Grey Theme Accessibility Issue - Low Contrast Text in Search and Tab Controls

Switch Visio from Dark Gray to Black, White, or Colorful as the immediate workaround, then report the affected controls through Visio’s in-app feedback because this issue is not identified in the published notes for Version 2609 Build 20430.20180.

Apply the workaround

1. In Visio, open File > Options > General.
2. Under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, open Office Theme.
3. Select Black, White, or Colorful, and select OK.
4. Recheck:
   • The search box at the top of the Shapes pane.
   • Inactive page tabs at the bottom of the drawing.

Microsoft describes Dark Gray as using “softer grays with contrasty controls,” so white text on a similarly light background does not match the theme’s documented presentation. Office themes can be changed independently of the Windows theme.^1^

This setting changes the application interface. Do not use Design > Themes as a workaround; Visio drawing themes change the colors and effects of shapes in the diagram, not the application controls.^2^

Report it as a Visio UI problem

The Monthly Enterprise Channel notes list Version 2609 (Build 20430.20180) only as containing “various fixes to functionality and performance”; they do not identify this contrast problem as a known or resolved issue.^3^

Submit a report directly from the affected installation:

1. Reapply Dark Gray temporarily and reproduce the problem.
2. Select File > Feedback > Report a problem or I don’t like something, depending on the wording displayed.

5. State that this concerns Visio application chrome/UI controls, not colors inside a diagram.

For Office Version 2104 and later, diagnostic logs can be included automatically with “I don’t like something” feedback when optional diagnostic data is enabled. If optional diagnostics or connected experiences are disabled by organizational policy, those logs will not be sent.^5^

Conditional Windows check

Only if similar mismatched colors also occur in other Windows applications, check Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes and set the contrast theme to None. Windows contrast themes have produced comparable white-on-light or mixed-color behavior across applications.^6^

If the problem is confined to Visio, appears specifically under Dark Gray, and disappears immediately under another Office theme, retain the alternate Office theme and treat the issue as a theme-specific Visio rendering problem pending a product update.
