Visio Dark Grey Theme Accessibility Issue - Low Contrast Text in Search and Tab Controls

Microsoft Visio Plan 2 is rendering several UI controls with poor contrast when the Dark Grey Office theme is selected.

Environment

  • Microsoft Visio Plan 2
  • Version 2609
  • Build 20430.20180
  • Office Theme: Dark Grey

Issue

In the Dark Grey theme, a number of controls appear to render white text on a light grey background, resulting in poor readability.

Examples include:

  • The Shapes pane search box.
  • Inactive page tabs along the bottom of diagrams.

The contrast is significantly lower than in other areas of the application. For example:

  • The New Template search box displays dark text on a light background and is easily readable.
  • The Shapes pane search box displays white text on a similarly light background and is difficult to read.

This creates an inconsistent user experience and may represent an accessibility and contrast issue.Microsoft Visio Plan 2 is rendering several UI controls with poor contrast when the Dark Grey Office theme is selected.

    Hello Paul Brace

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed description of the issue and for including specific examples of the affected UI elements.

Before anything else, I'd like to clarify that this forum is primarily a user-to-user community. While discussions here can help raise awareness and gather feedback from other users, this is not the official channel through which product changes or UI improvements are tracked by the Microsoft engineering teams.

To ensure your feedback reaches the appropriate team, I would strongly recommend submitting it through Microsoft's official Feedback Portal -Microsoft 365 Feedback Hub

That platform is specifically designed for product feedback, feature requests, usability concerns, and accessibility-related issues. Feedback submitted there can be reviewed and considered directly by the product team as they evaluate potential improvements and enhancements for future releases.

I encourage you to submit the report through the Microsoft Feedback Portal and include "screenshots" (if available), and the contrast comparisons you have outlined above. Doing so will give the feedback the best chance of being reviewed by the Visio product team for consideration in future updates.

You can also "share the link" of your feedback here so other users can vote it to support you.

Thank you again for documenting the issue so thoroughly and for helping improve the Visio user experience for everyone.

    Stay safe and happy!

Switch Visio from Dark Gray to Black, White, or Colorful as the immediate workaround, then report the affected controls through Visio’s in-app feedback because this issue is not identified in the published notes for Version 2609 Build 20430.20180.

    Apply the workaround

    1. In Visio, open File > Options > General.
    2. Under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, open Office Theme.
    3. Select Black, White, or Colorful, and select OK.
    4. Recheck:
      • The search box at the top of the Shapes pane.
      • Inactive page tabs at the bottom of the drawing.

Microsoft describes Dark Gray as using “softer grays with contrasty controls,” so white text on a similarly light background does not match the theme’s documented presentation. Office themes can be changed independently of the Windows theme.^1^

This setting changes the application interface. Do not use Design > Themes as a workaround; Visio drawing themes change the colors and effects of shapes in the diagram, not the application controls.^2^

Report it as a Visio UI problem

The Monthly Enterprise Channel notes list Version 2609 (Build 20430.20180) only as containing “various fixes to functionality and performance”; they do not identify this contrast problem as a known or resolved issue.^3^

Submit a report directly from the affected installation:

    1. Reapply Dark Gray temporarily and reproduce the problem.
    2. Select File > Feedback > Report a problem or I don’t like something, depending on the wording displayed.
      • Keyboard route: press Alt+F, K, then use Tab to select the reporting option.^4^
    3. Attach screenshots comparing:
      • Shapes-pane search versus New Template search.
      • Active versus inactive page tabs.
      • Dark Gray versus a theme with readable contrast.
    4. Include these exact details:
      • Visio Plan 2 for Windows
      • Version 2609
      • Build 20430.20180
      • Office theme: Dark Gray
      • Display scaling and Windows version
      • Whether the issue occurs on every monitor
    5. State that this concerns Visio application chrome/UI controls, not colors inside a diagram.

For Office Version 2104 and later, diagnostic logs can be included automatically with “I don’t like something” feedback when optional diagnostic data is enabled. If optional diagnostics or connected experiences are disabled by organizational policy, those logs will not be sent.^5^

    Conditional Windows check

Only if similar mismatched colors also occur in other Windows applications, check Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes and set the contrast theme to None. Windows contrast themes have produced comparable white-on-light or mixed-color behavior across applications.^6^

If the problem is confined to Visio, appears specifically under Dark Gray, and disappears immediately under another Office theme, retain the alternate Office theme and treat the issue as a theme-specific Visio rendering problem pending a product update.
