Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hello Zach H
I understand why this is frustrating, especially since Office 2016 was included with the laptop and worked for many years.
An activation prompt does not automatically mean that you need to purchase Office again. It can appear if the locally stored activation information is damaged, Office detects a different license, or the installation can no longer validate the original entitlement.
Please try the following:
- Open Word and select File > Account. Please tell us the exact product name shown under Product Information, such as Office Home & Student 2016, Office Home & Business 2016, or Office Professional Plus 2016.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page using the Microsoft account originally used when Office was first activated. Check whether Office 2016 is listed there.
- If Office 2016 is listed, return to Word, select File > Account, sign out of any other accounts, and then sign in with the account showing the Office license.
- Check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for multiple Office installations. If both Microsoft 365 and Office 2016 are installed, the additional installation may be causing a licensing conflict.
- Refer to this site Microsoft Office activation troubleshooter and select the activation troubleshooter to restart the computer, and test Word again.
If the license is not shown in the Microsoft account, please locate the original purchase receipt, product-key card, or documentation supplied with the laptop. You may then use the Microsoft Product Activation Portal to reactivate a perpetual Office license.
Also, Office 2016 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. This does not by itself convert a valid one-time-purchase license into a subscription, but Office 2016 no longer receives regular security updates or technical support.
Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
