0x0 Error After Mac Update July 14th, 2026

I’m unable to activate Word or Excel on my Mac. Every time I sign in, I receive:

“Unknown Error. An unknown error has occurred. The error code is: 0x0.”

My Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is active, and the same account works normally on a different computer. Microsoft Teams also signs in successfully on the affected Mac.

I have already:

  • Updated macOS
  • Confirmed the subscription is active
  • Signed out older devices
  • Cleared Microsoft credentials from Keychain
  • Restarted the Mac
  • Completely uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office
  • Signed in using the account that owns the subscription

The issue still occurs in both Word and Excel. I also briefly saw an unfamiliar old Microsoft account during the sign-in process.

Has anyone found a working fix for this specific 0x0 activation error on Mac, or can Microsoft confirm whether this is a current activation issue?

Hi all, I found a solve that worked for me on 7/14 to stop the 0x0 error and successfully activate.

My Setup

  • I am running Tahoe 26.5.2 on a 2025 Macbook with a personal M365 subscription not a specific MS software license.
  • Microsoft is discontinuing support for older versions of the apps and for Macs running any OS earlier than Monterey.
  • You must be running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later else my solution won't work for you.

Upon trying to resolve via App store update I was receiving an error that the apple ID didn't match the subscription. I also couldn't reinstall from the App store. It MAY work for you. Other folks in this thread report one or more of the following solved the 0x0 error for them:

  • Update your MS apps to the latest version
  • Update your OS to the latest version
  • Delete and reinstall via the Mac App Store

If you're able to update via the app store that may enough to fix. Again, I couldn't update as I was getting an apple ID error. My theory is some logic is trying to force a match between App Store download + Apple ID so the path of Mac App Store Download > login with existing 365 account isn't supported, or there's a bug disallowing it.

What Worked for Me

Assuming your Mac is on the latest OS, your MS apps are up to date, you have an active MS 365 license* and your apps were originally downloaded via the Mac App Store try this:

  1. Delete the apps from your machine (drag from Finder > Applications to trash, then empty trash).
  2. Go into your MS account online online and navigate to subscriptions
  3. Download the installer for Mac and reinstall via that path.

Other things that I tried but didn't work:

  • Manually trying to deleting keychain licenses
  • Signing out of my profile in apps and signing back in
  • Running a license removal tool from another MS thread
  • Activating a new license via free trial through Apple
  • Running Microsoft AutoUpdate - not on my computer bc my apps were from the app store

Important notes before you follow my directions!!!

*****Microsoft has discontinued support for the below scenarios. This means you'll no longer have editing access - technical support is no longer there meaning no update is coming to fix.

If any of the above apply to you - my solution will not resolve the issue.

If you can't upgrade to OS 12 or have a perpetual license that's no longer supported:

Alternatives MS recommends are using the web versions of the app, or accessing via a different computer.

As I know it's not practical for everyone to go buy a new computer to keep working - I would also add a third option to access the apps. It is NOT the most conveinent but it allows you to 1. work in the office app 2. pay much less than you would for a new computer.

This thread is getting long, with some users saying a solution works and others saying it does not. Keep in mind that not everyone is using the same macOS version or the same version of Microsoft Office, so there is no single solution that applies to everyone.

To make things clearer, I will summarize the most common scenarios below so you can identify which one matches your situation. If none of them apply, it would be best to start a new thread so your specific issue can receive the attention it needs.

If your OS is above version 12 but below 14 and if there's no way for you to upgrade further, your office products can be functional, but Microsoft no longer maintains or updates that version. In this scenario, you can install the older downgraded version.

For macOS Monterey 12, the August 2024 release, version 16.88, was the final Office build supporting Monterey. You will need to uninstall it. And install the downgraded version (16.88) here: https://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.88.24081116_Installer.pkg

For macOS Ventura 13, final release was 16.101, from September 2025. Uninstall your current Ms365, then downgrade to version 16.101 by using this installer. https://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.101.25091314_Installer.pkg

If your MacOS is below 12 and you cannot upgrade it at all, it will now enter reduced functionality mode. In another word, the OS is too old to receive the licensing update the Office now requires. Sorry.

Your options are:

  1. Use the web version via https://www.office.com
  2. Use your Office products on a different device.

If your MacOS is above 14 and you ran into 0x0 or other activation issue, as long as your Office is not from 2019 or earlier, try this:

Use the Update method in this article: https://support.microsoft.com/support/known-issues/unknown-error-0x0-license-not-found-error-microsoft365-macos

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

If you signed up via Apple App Store, then download and install from the App Store.

If you signed up via Microsoft directly, install from Microsoft. See instructions https://support.microsoft.com/office/download-install-or-reinstall-microsoft-365-or-office-2024-on-a-pc-or-mac-4414eaaf-0478-48be-9c42-23adc4716658

If you have Office 2019 and earlier version,

It does NOT matter which MacOS version you have. Starting July 13, 2026, Office 2019 for Mac entered reduced functionality mode because its licensing certificate can no longer be updated. Office may still open documents, but it can no longer activate for editing, saving, or creating files. The 0x0 error is part of that activation failure.

Microsoft confirms that Office 2019 for Mac cannot be updated to the required version, and reinstalling Office 2019 will not resolve it.

The available options are:

  1. Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint online for free through Microsoft 365 for the web.
  2. Purchase a supported version such as Office Home 2024.
  3. Subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Your existing documents are not deleted or damaged, but Office 2019 for Mac can no longer be restored to full editing mode through activation troubleshooting.

I managed to solve this issue last night. What worked for me was uninstalling Microsoft Office and redownloading it. I have an older mac, so I had to find an older version that my computer supported which can be found at the link below. If you have a newer mac, you should be able to just download the current version. Hope this helps!

    Hi,

I first updated my MacOS but office still gave me activation error. Then I moved the word app to trash and then reinstalled the word from App Store. This solved the problem. Careful: If you are using an older version of MacOS, do not delete the office apps because you may not be able to get them again on App Store!!!! I could get the office apps on App Store because my Mac supports the latest software update of MacOS (Tahoe 26.5.2) App Store allows you to download the whole new version of Office Word. Microsoft Auto Update software had not been helpful in updating office (it said no updates available but it was incorrect).
