This was working fine yesterday (12/31/25) but today, all day long when I click "Refresh All" I am getting the error:
Microsoft Excel - Sorry, our server is temporarily having problems. We're working to fix it.
The data types I have in my spreadsheet are "Stocks"
Under the ribbon it says COULDN'T REFRESH DATA TYPES Sorry, our server is temporarily having problems. We're working to fix it.
Yes, I am connected to the internet, no issues there.
Is this a problem I need to do something to fix or wait until Microsoft fixes it? It has been doing this for at least 8 hours.

How do I check the Microsoft 365 service status page for updates on ongoing issues?
The issue is still happening but Microsoft 365 service health status page says everything is fine.
Does Microsoft know about their server problem and are they working on it?
Thank you!
Many of us have been here with the same problem multiple times a few years ago. I've tried it all this time, which is standard operating procedure...including multiple machines with and without updated apps and operating systems. Something broke on 1/1/2026, and there's zero we can do until it is fixed on the Microsoft side. The only thing we can do is call Microsoft and tell them. The more calls they get...squeaky wheel.
That said, I BEG someone to tell me their system didn't work, then they did XYZ, and viola! Please make me eat my words before the market opens tomorrow.
Same issue here. People have reported the issue on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/excel/comments/1q16kqt/stockhistory_function_not_working_jan1_2026/?share_id=gOt61KAKBxW-Lqq8YRAJ4&utm_content=1&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1 The issue is not related to anyone machine, network/connection but a Microsoft issue.
Im having the same issue for stocks and currencies. I dont know when it started for me, I noticed it on the 1st Jan. Ive reported it as well
I tried all the steps that have been suggested here and I am still having the issue this morning.
Yesterday I contacted Microsoft support, chat, the rep accessed my computer and checked lots of things and said everything was fine, the server is probably having problems and to wait 24 hours.
I asked the rep to report the server problem to someone or make sure someone knows about the outage and the rep stated it would be documented in the case, that it is the IT team that handles that type of issue.
I did not get the feeling the rep could report the issue to the IT team directly since the rep simply said it would be documented in the case.
Hopefully Microsoft will get this fixed soon.
Experiencing same issue in Excel. Excel/Data/Refresh all... Trying to get Stock values updated and get the message "sorry, our server is temporarily having problems. We're working to fix it."
I went to my second PC separate excel spreadsheet also with stock info and received the same error. So two PCs different spreadsheets same error.
I provided screenshot to MS via Help/Feedback. As DR posted above, everyone please do this to get someone's attention at Microsoft.
I have the same problem, still not updating and the market is opened now...

Yup. I have the same issue. Same message.
Can I ask that people avoid posting messages simply saying they have the same issue as we know the problem is widespread, so saying "me too" adds nothing other than to clog up our inboxes with identical messages.
I'm having the same problem as everyone else here.
'COULDN'T REFRESH DATA TYPES'
Clearly it's a Microsoft issue.
Same error. Will report to Microsoft.
As of Friday, January 2nd, noon ET, from Microsoft Support:
"Our backend team is aware and actively working to resolve the stock function issue, and we expect the feature to be restored soon."
They did give me the ticket number, but said that there's no public page to monitor progress; 'as it is a temporary issue, we recommend using the Help tab in Excel and sending feedback from there.'
Exact same results here... however, I noticed it on 12/31. But it's still broken today. Come on MS!
same problem at the same time. tried all of the recommended solutions so must be a Microsoft issue
There is no "Voilà" on my side and I am wasting my time. Are we just a couple of users using this excel features in the world. I mean how come Microsoft is not seeing that with all their AI agents working for the sake of our efficiency :-)
same here it's not working from 1st Jan. I have re-installed office and nothing happens
Created python code, with help of Copilot, with excel stock data. In process of updating formulas to recognize when server is down.

I've been having the same issue since Jan 1 and have reported it to Microsoft. Fingers crossed it gets resolved soon.

It is disgraceful that Excel continues to suffer from financial data server errors, causing harm and financial losses for millions of subscribers worldwide. This happens several times a year. The company must either renew and upgrade its servers or entrust the issue to another provider capable of resolving the problem permanently. This is a shame on Excel.
Did everything indicated and still receiving same error!

Same issue, Stocks Data not working!
Same problem here - reported the problem via Excel Feedback
still the same error. has anyone reported this?
Reported many times. For the record, it will be the community here that actually notifies the group that the problem has been fixed…you won’t find out on the status page at Microsoft.
My Office 365 subscription increases 42% this month. We expect better!!
5:10 pm CST - still having the same issue
What is really baffling is a company with 3.5 Trillion in market capitalization and can’t fix this error for almost three days now!!!
I just cancelled my Office 365 subscription. I am tired of paying for the privilege of using MSFT's buggy Office apps; MSFT is so focused on jamming Co-Pilot into everything that basic functionality is an afterthought!
Still out, maybe everyone is still on vacation? monday fix?
Still not refreshing, 3rd Jan.
I am still having this problem on 3rd Jan. I find it hard to believe MSFT have not fixed it by now.
Ive worked with MSFT on a huge account that paid them millions. They are awful

I contacted MS and they say it is a known problem and they are working on a fix. I bet it is no coincidence that the year changed 2025-2026 and the Data - Stocks broke.
I first experienced the problem on December 31, 2025.
The stocks data was the main reason I keep a Windows computer and pay to subscribe to 365. Clearly it’s more important to me than to Microsoft, who demonstrates no sense of urgency. Might as well go full Apple.
I just submitted this as a news tip to ABC, NBC and CNN news. If they pick up the story that may help to get someone at Microsoft to realize there is a problem.
That’s awesome! I wish I’d have thought of that.
Sorry, our server is temporarily having problems. We're working to fix it...Whats going on here????
So far, nothing. No progress. No sense of urgency by Microsoft.
I have the same issue describe above and Microsoft seems to have no clue that Excel is useless without the ability to update stock quotes. This is the third day of frustration!
The problem still hasn't been fixed. It has been a while now. Hope someone at Microsoft would notice.
Refreshing online data types and tried a new spreadsheet. Inserting a stock (for example MSFT) error comes up “Sorry, our server is temporarily having problems. We’re working on it”.
On Jan 1st I contacted Microsoft via X, and the response was the following. “We tested the issue on our end and encountered the same error. We have escalated your case to our internal team for further review. Once we receive their feedback, we will provide you with an update. We appreciate your patience and understanding. ~ML”
It is ridiculous that MSFT has allowed this to persist for nearly 4 days >> Is there a workaround to easily fix this problem?

Why do we keep giving this company our money??!!!
Its Jan 3 and this is still a problem. Why can't they fix it!! Why do we keep giving this company our money??
Even microsoft support contact page has issue, what a joke?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus
The link won't work, was anyone able to chat with an agent?
From Microsoft Support on X
“Thanks for getting back to us. We appreciate your patience and effort as we work on fixing this concern.
Rest assured that our support engineers are on it, actively investigating these activities and working hard to restore normalcy. We're doing everything we can to resolve this promptly.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. ~E.M.”

Very bad, still no resolution or even updates for a problem affecting everywhere?
Same issue. It's been over three days now. This is ridiculous.
I just wasted 45 minutes with tech support where I said from the beginning that this was a widespread issue (even sharing a community post where it was being discussed at large) and I just wanted the ETA on the fix. Nope, tech wanted to remote into my computer and, funny enough, that didn't fix anything. Never did get an answer on the ETA and they told me to post my problem here. Not sure what tech support is even supposed to be for, but you know how these companies get when they become de facto monopolies -- no longer motivated to provide any sort of quality whatsoever.
4 days and the problem is still there. others please message on X and other social media to create awareness of this issue. lodgew tickets etc
Anyone know an easy way to automatically use Yahoo finance data instead of Bing/Excel?
This is stupid for the price of 365 and the size or Microsoft teams... if this is a server-side expiration problem ... i mean... what is more predictable than that with a new year change...
Supreme aggravation. Hope all you MS'ers enjoyed your nice long holiday without one care for your users. See you Monday morning.
4 days now - no official response?
I've heard Microsoft loud and clear. - They do not care about or want my business.
Migrating all away as we speak.
No sense of urgency. Rethinking my January 22 renewal since this was my only reason to keep a Windows machine. Time to go full IOS.
The data refresh is still not working, as we pass the 4th day I do not see updates for shares or forex currencies in my excel... Quite disappointed it needs 4 days to fix a bugg like this.
At least Google Sheets and Apple Numbers are getting the Stock Exchange data perfectly. Maybe it is time to start ditching Excel and start using other tools that offer better resilience...
I replicated my fairly complex price and key performance metric stock tracking in google sheets and was pretty surprised how easy it was. I haven't explored all the googlefinance features but will do this next. It's a tiny bit more techy oriented than MS but not so much that I couldn't figure it out. I'll probably run my spreadsheets in parallel after (if) MS every gets around to fixing it but I am now at least a half step away from dumping Excel.
This is working now, its strange that support was saying that they are working on it. But after completing the chat, I was able to refresh data successfully.
It's fixed for me! Working as of Monday January 5.
OK, the server is working but now much of the stocks price data is incorrect, at least the closing prices today. This is actually worse than being down. Can anybody advise when we can trust the data again?
For those of you who are paying for O365 because you think it's the only way to get stock prices, you don't need to! Search for "Office cd key" buy a one time key for < $20, then use excel online for your stock prices by saving your s/s to onedrive, and view online. I've been doing this for several years, no monthly subscription required!
is anyone having this issue again? (Jan 23)
Problem has returned for me too 1/23/2026 10:55am EST
Other threads are posting this also.
12:34 PM Pacific not working for me.
It stop working for me early in the morning and then it works for a while and not working since right before lunch time. Why can't MSFT get their shxt together?

3/18/2026 same problem today with Stock Data not updating in Excel as of 12:16pm EDT
Server is down again as of 4/28/26 11:00am EST
I am facing this problem today. Am not able to refresh stock prices in Excel sheet.
Beware! Many of today's closing prices are incorrect!
OK, the server is up again. However, the Stocks data is often wrong. Many of today's closing prices are incorrect. Bad data is actually worse than no data! Could you please review and advise when we can trust the data again?

Server back down again today - seems an ongoing issue for Microsoft
