Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are receiving RPCRT4.dll error on start up and I will be happy to answer your query.

The Rpcrt4.dll file is a file associated with the Remote Procedure Call program, and is used by a number of Windows applications for network and Internet connections, which allow computers and devices to communicate between one another in order to keep your computer in perfect working order. Because this file is a dynamic link library file, this means that it has a specific function that it must carry out in order to keep your system working.

Some of the main causes of this particular error are going to resolve around the file itself and with the Windows registry. Some of the causes are going to be:

  • Windows registry keys are damaged and corrupt
  • The RPCRT4.dll file is missing
  • Connection has timed out

You may try the following methods and check the result.

Method 1: Check your internet connection

The first thing you should do is reset your modem or router, as this will refresh your Internet connection. You may seek your ISP's help doing so as well. To reset the modem or router follow the instructions:

  • Disconnect the cable that connects the computer to the modem
  • Turn off the modem and the router
  • Note: If the model or the router does not have a power switch, disconnect the power to the modem or to the router
  • Restart the computer
  • After your computer has restarted, turn on the modem or the router, connect the cable from the computer to the modem or the router and restart the computer
  • Make sure that all network cables are securely connected

Method 2: Run System File Checker tool

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

Type the following command and press Enter

sfc /scannow

Note: Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.

AS of now, please try the above methods and let us know the status.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

I have seen the error with the following in the title bar:

    BoxSync.exe

    PhotoSync.exe

    Update.exe

    SelfService.exe

    SelfServicePlugin.exe

    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit

    system32\rpcrt4.dll is version 6.1.7601.23470

but my size is much different than yours above 1.15MB (1,212,928 bytes)

    syswow64\rpcrt4.dll is also version 6.1.7601.23470

and the size is 650KB (666,112 bytes)

For anybody that has this problem, what executable (.exe) is on the top of the error message box?

Like in this example the complaining executable is wlmail.exe:

For your error what is the name of the executable?

Then tell us the File version number from the Details of the RPCRT4.dll on your system by navigating to this folder:

    c:\windows\system32

Locate the RPCRT4.dll file, right click it, Properties and the Details tab:

Inside DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries) are functions (like program subroutines) and each has an ordinal number to go with it (1, 2, 3, 4..., 500, 501, 502, etc.) and the ordinal numbers in RPCRT4.dll for Windows 7 or Windows 10 don't go up to 1000:

In that example from Windows 7 the ordinal numbers only go up to 541.

The message is telling you that the executable (whatever it is) is looking for a function with an ordinal of 1000 inside the RPCRT4.dll and not finding it.

Either the executable is wrong (1000 seems like kind of an odd number) or the RPCRT4.dll is wrong.

But I have never seen this problem so maybe with more information we can figure out which of the two is afflicted.

Need your Windows 7 edition (Home, Pro, etc.).

Need the name of the executable.

Need the File version info from the RPCRT4.dll on your system.
