File History. Reconnect Your Drive

When I try to run File history it indicate there is no available FHJ drive.
I have done various troubleshooting:

%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory
I reset FH by renaming the Configuration and the Data folder to Configuration.old and Data. to Data.old

I had no need for the backup folders on my Network drive, so I deleted them in order to do a clean up for a new backup.

When I have selected the backup drive (NAS Server wired to the Router) and accepted the BitLocker must, I perform a Run Now just to get this error message, instantly:
"File History. Your files will be temporary copied to your hard drive until you reconnect your File History drive and run a backup"

That I can do in eternity.

PS. I can see that FH has generated the backup folders on my Network Drive, but they are empty, of course.

I have run out of possible solutions, so please help. BTW. The Network Drive is working fine and accessible from Windows Explorer.
I don't understand why I get this error, all of a sudden.

I have come so far, that 2026-09 Security Update (KB5124008) (26200.9445) is causing all the trouble. I uninstalled it on my wife's laptop and File History could again be configured and now works just as it should.
On this my own laptop (identical to my wife's) the 2026-09 Security Update (KB5124008) (26200.9445) cannot be uninstalled. It is not in the list of updates to uninstall. I followed an advice to open an elevated CMD prompt and ran wusa /uninstall /KB:5124008. I got this error message:

This makes no sense at all. I need to get this horrible security update uninstalled to get my File History up running again. How can this be done?

I uninstalled the 9/15/2026 (KB5129195)(26200.9457), once that was uninstalled the 9/9/2026 (KB5124008)(26200.9445) was available to uninstall.

It looks like Microsoft is aware that KB5124008, build 26200.9445 broke File History. They don't seem to have a fix for it yet, other than trying to uninstall, which I can't seem to do on my PC.

I'm having essentially the same problem, except the FileHistory drive I'm trying to connect is my external SSD, not a network drive. I've used this drive for a very long time without problems. Now, for some reason, FH insists I "Reconnect" it.

Not having any luck troubleshooting.

I finally solved the problem. I managed to remove the culprit

2026-09 Security Update (KB5124008) (26200.9445) but after reboot it was stil listed. But this time I could reconfiger FH and run a new backup. Windows Update wanted to install it again, but I prevented that by pausing WU, stop pausing and hide the update using MS own wushowhide.cab. WU does not present it any more.

Anders, thanks and great job discovering the culprit behind the File History problem. I would like to uninstall the 2026-09 Security Update (KB5124008) but that item is not listed in the "Uninstall Updates" screen on my computer. That's probably because it has been superseeded by a newer 2026-09 Security Update (KB5129195) (26200.9457), which just installed today, 9/14. The latter update IS uninstallable. Would you recommend that I try uninstalling this latest security update? Thanks.

Hi Bruin,
WU installed the 2026-09 Security Update (KB5129195) (26200.9457) and just rendered File History useless. Again, again. It has become a tedious job! I found KB5129195 and was able to uninstall it. After a multible reboot it was still to find as an security update, installed successfully. However, I was able to get File History up running and using the previous backup. Cautioun: I let WU check for updates again and it found (KB5129195) (26200.9457) again and wanted to install it. I instantly ran WU showhide.diagcap and choose hide updates. It gave me a list where (KB5129195) (26200.9457) was present. I checked it and WU showhide solved the problem. It was still in WU to be downloaded, so I paused WU, waited a moment and resumed WU. Ran WU again and there was no new updates. Bingo!
I am not in a position to recommend you what to do, but this is what I did. I have to add that I managed to uninstall the prios security update the other day (KB5124008) and the scenario, described, was just the same.

Both (KB5124008) and (KB5129195) are listed as succesfully installed. Nuts!

September 22, 2026—KB5124010 (OS Builds 26200.9550 and 26100.9550) Preview resolves the File History error.

[File History] This update addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices might incorrectly display a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.
