How to resolve Run File History failure

Trying to manually extract File History to a valid and accessible flash drive. The appropriate drive appears when File History is selected but the following message appears when the run function is exercised:

"Reconnect Your Drive

Your files will be temporarily copied to your hard drive until you reconnect your File History drive and run a backup."

I do this weekly and have done so for years without issue. The last run was successfully executed on 09/12/2026 and the run attempt on 09/26/2026 spawned the error message.

I've tried the various fixes suggested in researching a solution but to no avail. I may not be getting the desired response because of the way I structure the query but it seems pretty straight forward.

Has anyone else encountered this issue recently and/or have a solution that will allow me to run File History?

Thanks!

A recent Windows update has broken File History in Windows 11, this is a widely reported problem, Microsoft have indicated they are aware of this problem and they are working to resolve the problem and will provide a patched update as soon as they have found the cause of the problem in that update, currently, there is no workaround to resolve this, we just need to wait for Microsoft to resolve this.

Update from Microsoft:

September 22, 2026—KB5124010 (OS Builds 26200.9550 and 26100.9550) Preview resolves the File History error.

[File History] This update addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices might incorrectly display a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.
