Issue with account login in Teams Windows app

Hello,

One of our users does not manage to login to the Teams app on her desktop. She does manage to connect to the web version.

When the account selection screen pops up, and she selects her account, the app page seems to reload and comes back to the account selection.

We have tried to delete the content of %LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache, without visible effect. We also have tried to remove the Windows authentifiers in the Windows authentification manager, but have not found any entry linked to Teams or Office.

Would you have some ideas to troubleshoot this issue?

Thansk & regards,

Damien

Dear @Damien,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Thank you for providing those details and for sharing the troubleshooting steps you've already tried.Since the user can successfully access Teams on the web, this may indicate an issue with the local Teams client, cached credentials, or the Windows account connection on the affected device.

Regarding this situation, please kindly try the following suggestions:

  • Sign out of Teams completely and close it from the system tray
  • Verify that both Windows and Teams are fully up to date
  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, disconnect the affected work/school account, restart the device, and then reconnect the account
  • Open Credential Manager > Windows Credentials and check for any Microsoft 365, Office, Teams, Azure AD, or Work/School Account credentials. If found, kindly remove the relevant entries and then attempt to sign in again
  • Test with a new Windows user profile to determine whether the issue is profile-specific
  • If necessary, uninstall Teams, restart the device, and install the latest version again

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful.

I'm here and happy to help! Thank you for your kindness and patience!

Since the user can sign in to Teams on the web, the account itself is likely working and the issue is isolated to the Windows desktop client.

    Try this end-to-end path:

    1. Fully uninstall and reinstall Teams
      • Uninstall Teams.
      • Browse to %appdata%\Microsoft and delete the Teams folder.
      • Reinstall Teams. If possible, run the installer as an administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
    2. Reset the Teams app from Windows
      • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options > Reset.
      • If available and reset does not help, use Repair.
    3. Fully close Teams before retrying
      • Quit Teams from the system tray.
      • Open Task Manager and end any remaining Microsoft Teams processes.
      • Start Teams again and test sign-in.
    4. Check Windows date and time
      • Right-click the clock > Adjust date & time.
      • Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
      • Select Sync now.
    5. Test whether the Windows user profile is the cause
      • If the problem continues, ask a local administrator to delete the user profile on the computer, then sign in again to recreate it.
      • This is more disruptive than the earlier steps because it resets the local Windows profile.
    6. If the issue still persists, collect logs and open a support request
      • Collect Teams debug logs and include the sign-in behavior details when creating the request.

The steps already tried were reasonable, but the documented cleanup path specifically includes removing %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams and reinstalling the client. If web sign-in works while desktop sign-in loops back to account selection, that points to local app data, client state, or the Windows profile rather than the account itself.
