Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Sign in to Excel with the Microsoft account that owns the Office license, then verify that the associated subscription or purchase is active.
1. Verify the account and license
- Close all Office applications.
- Open the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the account used to purchase or redeem Office.
- Confirm that Microsoft 365 or your Office product appears:
- If the subscription is expired or cancelled, renew it.
- If the product is missing, try any other personal email address you may have used to purchase it.
- For an employer or school license, use the assigned work or school account.
- Reopen Excel and sign in with that same account when prompted.
Using a different email address can produce “We couldn't find any Office products” and leave Excel unlicensed. ^1^
2. Remove conflicting Office installations
On Windows:
- Select Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search for
Office. - If several Office versions are installed, uninstall the versions you no longer use.
- Restart the computer, open Excel, and sign in again.
Multiple Office installations can conflict with activation. Do not remove the only installed copy at this stage. ^1^
3. Run the activation troubleshooter
If this is Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 or later, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from the official support page:
- Start the troubleshooter on the same PC where Excel is installed.
- Select Open when the browser asks to open Get Help.
- Complete the prompts and reopen Excel.
The troubleshooter's Windows 10-or-later requirement does not apply to the account and subscription checks above. ^1^
4. Repair Office if activation still fails
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Modify > Online Repair > Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Excel again.
Online Repair affects the complete Office installation, not only Excel. ^2^
If it remains unlicensed, also:
- Correct Windows date, time, and time zone, then restart Excel.
- Open File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Close Office, right-click Excel in the Start menu, select Run as administrator, and try activation again. ^1^
If none of these resolves it, record the exact activation error message or code, the Office edition (Microsoft 365, Office 2024/2021/2019, or LTSC), and whether Windows or macOS is being used. Those details determine the next product-specific action.
