Error 0x8004de40 means OneDrive is having trouble connecting to the cloud.
Since reset and reinstall have already been tried, use this order:
- Confirm internet access on the affected device If the device is not actually connected, OneDrive sign-in will fail with this error.
- Check TLS settings
- Press Windows key + R
- Type
inetcpl.cpland press Enter - Open the Advanced tab
- Make sure TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 are enabled
- Select Apply > OK
- If using Windows 10 or later, check TLS cipher suite order
Microsoft documents that OneDrive sign-in can fail even after TLS 1.2 is enabled if the cipher suites do not match Azure Front Door requirements. The supported TLS 1.2 cipher suites listed are:
-
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 -
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 -
TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 -
TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
Warning: changing cipher suite order affects system TLS behavior. Verify the result withEnable-TlsCipherSuite -Name "TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384" -Position 0Get-TlsCipherSuiteafter the change. -
- Restart the device After changing TLS settings, restart and try signing in again.
- If the device is joined to Microsoft Entra ID, rejoin it
Do this only while connected to the organization network.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Run:
dsregcmd /leave dsregcmd /join - Restart the computer
- Try OneDrive sign-in again
If the device is on Windows 8, Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Microsoft recommends enabling TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 by using the Easy Fix tool, and for Windows 8 also installing KB 3140245.
