OneDrive sign in error 0x8004de40

Note that I was directed to this portal from a link within https://support.microsoft.com, I could not find an appropriate tag and as this is mandatory I've tagged it to the device which is a Surface laptop though I think this is unlikely to have anything to do with the issue.

I carried out a recovery on my PC (Windows 11 Pro) using a freshly generated recovery media (this was so as to perform a clean install).

Following the recovery, all else appears in good order however there are problems with OneDrive sign in. The displayed error is:

"Check your internet connection, and then try again. (Error code: 0x8004de40)"

OneDrive comes with Windows 11 installation, the version is 25.243.1211.0001

Apparently this is rolling out at the moment.

Further information and attempts to resolve:

I've no discernible internet connection issues with other services and apps working OK. One solution I read suggested temporarily disabling the Windows Firewall so I tried that to no avail. OneDrive for the same account is working on other machines on my local network so it cannot be blamed on the ISP.

I did find a posted solution advising to re-enable the deprecated TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 protocols followed by a restart. It didn't seem a good idea but I tried that also and it made no difference.

Any suggestions welcome

The error 0x8004de40 typically points to a network or TLS connectivity issue. Since you’ve already ruled out ISP-related problems, firewall settings, and TLS 1.0/1.1, here are some targeted steps you can try next.

  • Internet Options → Advanced → Security. Make sure Use TLS 1.2 is checked and uncheck TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 as they are deprecated.
  • Open Command Prompt as Admin and type the following followed by hitting the Enter key: netsh winhttp reset proxy
  • Navigate to Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy and verify that no unauthorized or unnecessary proxy settings are enabled.
  • Resetting Microsoft OneDrive : open Run menu and type: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset followed by pressing the Enter Key.
  • Unlink & Relink OneDrive: Right-click the OneDrive icon, open Settings, choose Unlink this PC, restart the device, and then sign in to OneDrive again.
  • Download and install latest standalone OneDrive client

Thank you. These suggestions are helpful next steps though the problem has now ceased without any further effort other than the passage of a few more hours.

I can only speculate now as to what the cause may have been.
