    Hello Tim Osborn,

The expired Personal subscription should not normally prevent you from joining. A few users with the same “Join now” error found that the Family page contained a duplicate or incomplete membership entry.

Ask the subscription owner to open the Microsoft Family dashboard and check whether your account appears twice, such as once as a member and once as pending. If so, they can remove the existing member entry while leaving the pending invitation, then ask you to accept it again. This workaround has helped in similar cases.

If your account does not appear twice, the owner can instead try adding you through the Family Safety app rather than through the Microsoft 365 subscription-sharing page.

Also check your Microsoft account profile and complete any missing name, birth date, country/region, or security information, as an incomplete account profile may prevent the membership from being processed.

Ask the Microsoft 365 Family owner to resend the invitation, then accept the new invitation within 48 hours in an InPrivate/incognito browser while signed in with the exact Microsoft account that was invited.

    Accept a fresh invitation

    1. Have the subscription owner open the Microsoft 365 Services & subscriptions sharing page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing
    2. Under Share subscription, the owner should locate your account:
      • If it says Pending invite, select Resend invite.
      • Alternatively, create a new sharing link and send it to you by text or another messaging service.
    3. Open a new InPrivate/incognito window in a different browser.
    4. Sign in with the Microsoft account matching the invited email address.
    5. Open the newly issued invitation, select Get started or Accept, and then select Join now.

Invitations must be accepted within 48 hours. Until acceptance succeeds, the owner's sharing dashboard shows Pending invite, and the Family subscription will not appear in your account. [^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support") A matching case with the same “Sorry, something went wrong” and TraceId error was resolved by using a fresh invitation in another browser or private window. ^2^

Your expired Personal subscription does not need to appear as active. The important point is that the Family invitation is accepted using the same Microsoft account to which it was sent.

If the new invitation still fails

    • Check for another family group: If your account belongs to another Microsoft family group, leave that group before accepting the new invitation. An invitee can join the subscription only by joining the subscription owner's family group. [^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Someone invited you to share their Microsoft 365 subscription")
    • Have the owner verify eligibility: The owner's subscription must be active, have an available share, and show Share subscription on their Services & subscriptions page. Only the subscription owner can share it. [^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
    • Remove and re-share: If your entry is stuck, the owner should remove the pending share and issue a completely new invitation rather than reusing the failed link.

After successful acceptance, you should appear in the owner's family group and the shared benefits should become available in your Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 Family can be shared with up to five other people. Contact Microsoft Support if acceptance continues to fail

Open https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/ while signed in to the invited Microsoft account, enter Microsoft 365 Family invitation error, and select Contact Support. Provide:

    • The TraceId shown in the error
    • The approximate date, time, and time zone of the failed attempt
    • The invited Microsoft account address
    • Confirmation that a fresh invitation failed in an InPrivate/incognito window
    • A screenshot of the error, with personal information concealed

Support can investigate the account-side invitation transaction; the TraceId is useful for correlating the failed request.
