(You must open the Feedback Portal link and "Sign In" at the top right of the Feedback page before you can vote).

New Outlook does not save a reply email to the same folder if not in Inbox

    Hi Charles,

Thank you for sharing your concern.

New Outlook does not currently include the “When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder” option. At this time, replies are saved in the Sent Items folder regardless of where the original message is located.

This option is available in Classic Outlook for Exchange accounts under:

File > Options > Mail > Save messages > When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder

For now, you can consider one of the following alternatives:

    1. Switch back to Classic Outlook and enable the setting above.
    2. Manually move the sent message from Sent Items to the appropriate folder.
    3. In New Outlook, select Help > Feedback to submit a feature request to Microsoft. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

New Outlook for Windows does not currently provide the same-folder reply setting; use classic Outlook with an Exchange or Outlook.com account and enable When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.^1^

    Configure it in classic Outlook

    1. Open classic Outlook for Windows rather than new Outlook.
    2. Select File → Options → Mail.
    3. Scroll to Save messages.
    4. Ensure Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder is selected.
    5. Select When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.
    6. Select OK.

Afterward, replying to a message stored in another mail folder saves the sent reply in that same folder instead of only in Sent Items.^2^

This applies to replies to messages outside the Inbox. It does not automatically file a newly composed message merely because a folder was selected when the message was created.

    Account limitation

The setting is supported for Outlook.com and other Exchange accounts. It is not supported for IMAP accounts. In classic Outlook, check the account type under:

File → Account Settings → Account Settings → Email → Type

If the account is IMAP, Outlook cannot redirect sent copies to the originating folder; use manual filing or folder-specific rules instead.^2^
