Hello,

Everytime i ask this question i always get the answer for the old classic version of Outlook.

  1. Open Outlook and go to the File tab.
  2. Select Options.
  3. In the Outlook Options dialog box, click Mail in the left pane.
  4. Scroll down to the Save messages section.
  5. Check the box that says When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.

Outlook in office 365 does not have an ''Save emails'' option in the Mail section.

So how do i do itÉ

Thanks

    Hi @Dave King | Aubainerie,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concern regarding new Outlook functionality to save your reply where the initial email resides. I completely understand that losing this feature in new Outlook can feel limiting, especially for users who relied on it to quickly navigate the email. At this time, there is no setting to restore the classic behavior, and replies are currently saved to the Sent Items folder rather than the same folder as the original message.

As a forum moderator, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Outlook (new) · Community portal. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern.

In the new Outlook for Windows (the “New Outlook” toggle), the classic option

When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder

is not available. That setting exists only in classic Outlook for Windows and is documented for Outlook 2016/2019/2021/Microsoft 365 classic.

In classic Outlook, this behavior is configured via:

    1. File > Options > Mail.
    2. Under Save messages, enable Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder.
    3. Enable When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.

For Exchange/Outlook.com accounts, that is the supported way to save replies in the same folder as the original message. In the new Outlook experience, there is no equivalent user option documented in the provided material, and the behavior cannot be configured there the same way.

To use this feature, switch back to classic Outlook for Windows and configure it there.
