Web-based Microsoft Planner - labels refuse to change when trying to rename them

Question: How do I reset the labels so they do not revert to the original names that I had selected for them?

Issue Details: I edited and renamed the labels for my plan. I now want to rename them.

  • I click on the "pencil" edit icon, delete the current label name, type in the new name and hit Enter.
  • I have also tried retyping and clicking anywhere outside the label.
  • The label will change for that one row, but when I go back in to select another label within the same row or another row, it reverts back to the original label name.
  • I have also tried deleting all labels in my plan, reverting the names back to their color names, and starting with a blank slate. It still reverts to my original labels.

I have resolved the issue. DO NOT just "click anywhere outside the label drop-down list". DO click just to the right or left of the drop-down list. Clicking anywhere, like above the list, will not change the label to the new name.

Also, if the labels do not change in Grid view, go to Board view. I was able to change them there, and they now reflect properly in Grid view.

    Hi Lee

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community.

It appears you have an issue where renamed labels in Microsoft Planner keep reverting to their previous names.

Label names apply across the entire plan, so renaming a label should update every task using that label. Please try the following:

    1. Open Planner in an InPrivate or Incognito window.
    2. Rename the label using the pencil icon, then click outside the label field to save it.
    3. Refresh the page and check whether the new name remains.
    4. If it works in the private window, clear your browser’s cached data for Planner or try another browser.

If the issue occurs in multiple browsers, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to open a support request, as this may be a Planner synchronization or service issue.

    Warm Regards

Click outside the label-name field instead of pressing Enter; in the directly matching Planner issue, Enter did not persist the edit, while clicking elsewhere saved the new name.^1^

    Rename and save the label

    1. Open the affected plan in Planner.
    2. Open any task in that plan.
    3. Select Add label.
    4. Select the pencil icon beside the label.
    5. Delete the old text and enter the new name.
    6. Click elsewhere in the task pane—do not press Enter.
    7. Refresh the Planner page, reopen a task, and verify that the new name remains.

This exact save method resolved the same “reverts after pressing Enter” behavior.^2^

There is no need to delete or reset all the labels again. Label names are defined at the plan level: renaming a color changes every use of that label within the current plan, and labels defined on one task become available to every task in that plan.^3^

If clicking outside still does not save

Since deleting the labels and restoring their color names did not help, test a different session rather than repeating that reset:

    1. Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
    2. Sign in to Planner and open the same plan.
    3. Rename one label, then click outside the field.
    4. Refresh and check whether it persisted.

Also test whether the problem affects:

    • Only this plan or every plan.
    • Only Planner on the web or also the Planner/Tasks tab in Microsoft Teams.

If it works in a private window, the issue is isolated to the normal browser profile or session. If it fails across browsers and clients, it may require service-side investigation.

Escalate if the label still reverts

A Microsoft 365 administrator should first check Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health. If no relevant incident appears:

    1. Open Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. Select Help & support.
    3. Describe the issue, including the affected plan, browsers tested, and that clicking outside the field still does not persist the label.
    4. If the suggested results do not resolve it, select Contact Support and choose phone or email.

Microsoft documents that these business-support methods require an administrator; subscriptions purchased entirely through a partner must be escalated through that partner.^4^
