How to contact support

Why is it so hard to contact support?

I'm getting billed for an unknown tenant ID. When I log in with the email address the bill is going to I only see my "normal" tenant ID.
If I specifically try to login to that tenant ID and select my Microsoft account I get an access denied/user does not exist in tenant.
I need Microsoft to either get me access to this tenant or nuke it.

First try the work or school identity associated with the billing email, because selecting the personal Microsoft account does not rule out a second identity with the same address.

1. Check the other identity and locate the invoice

  1. Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window and sign in to the Azure portal.
  2. If prompted to choose an account type, select Work or school account rather than Personal account.
  3. Open Cost Management + Billing and check for the missing billing account or subscription.
  4. Select your profile in the upper-right corner → Switch directory. Check every directory under All directories.
  5. Search the Azure portal using the exact invoice number shown on the invoice—particularly an identifier such as Microsoft Gxxxxxxxxx—and select View your invoice if it appears.

An email address can represent separate personal and work identities, and only one may have billing access. If All directories is absent, that signed-in identity has access to only one tenant.^1^

2. Open an Azure billing request

If neither identity exposes the billed tenant:

  1. In the accessible Azure portal, select ? in the global header.
  2. Enter billing and proceed through Support + Troubleshooting.
  3. Select Create a support request.
  4. Choose Billing or the closest available issue type for an unrecognized charge or inaccessible billing account. The exact labels can vary.
  5. When recommended solutions appear, select Return to support request, then continue.
  6. In the description, state clearly:
    • You receive invoices for a specific tenant ID.
    • Neither the personal nor work identity can access that tenant.
    • Direct tenant sign-in returns “user does not exist in tenant” or access denied.
    • You need ownership verified and either access restored or the billed subscription cancelled.
  7. Include the invoice number, subscription ID if shown, tenant ID, charge dates and amounts, and the billing email. Do not post these identifiers publicly.
  8. Choose email or phone contact and submit.

Billing and subscription-management support does not require a paid technical support plan.^2^

However, Azure normally requires Owner, Contributor, Support Request Contributor, or equivalent permission to open a request against a subscription. Support also cannot treat a ticket attached to your normal subscription as authorization to investigate a different subscription that you cannot access.^2^

If the interface offers a billing/account request that does not require selecting the inaccessible subscription, use it. Do not create a new paid subscription merely to reach support.

3. If the portal will not let you submit

Use Microsoft’s regional customer-service channel and request routing to Azure Billing/Subscription Management for an inaccessible billed tenant. This is the documented fallback in a closely matching case where the account required cancellation but was no longer accessible.^3^

If that route fails, opening a billing request through an accessible subscription can be attempted only as a last-resort contact mechanism. Explain that the charged subscription is inaccessible and provide its identifiers privately, but support may be unable to act until ownership is separately verified.

Cases involving a genuine tenant lockout have been escalated by Microsoft through a support ticket to its Data Protection team for identity verification and access restoration. That escalation is determined internally; it is not a team that can be selected directly.^4^

If the charge might be fraudulent, also contact the card issuer to prevent additional charges; disputing only the existing charge might not prevent recurrence.^5^

So the AI response seems to have figured it out. Apperntly an email address can be tied to both a "personal" and a "work" profile.
