Hello,

since updating to iPadOS 26, PowerPoint on iPad (latest version from the App Store, updated [insert today’s date]) can no longer open .ppt files (the older binary format, pre-2007).

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open PowerPoint on iPadOS 26 (latest App Store version).
  2. Try to open any .ppt file (local, iCloud, OneDrive – same result).
  3. PowerPoint shows: “Cannot open file”

What I have tried:

  • Reinstalling PowerPoint app
  • Restarting iPad
  • Testing on multiple iPads (same result)
  • Testing different .ppt files that still open fine on Windows/Mac PowerPoint

Conclusion:

This issue affects all iPads running iPadOS 26 and seems to be specific to .ppt files. .pptx files work as expected.

Could you please confirm if this is:

  • an intentional deprecation of .ppt support on iPadOS, or
  • a bug introduced with the latest updates?

Right now, .ppt files cannot be opened at all on iPad, which causes major issues for users who still have archives of older presentations.

Thank you for clarifying and addressing this issue. Hello,

    Hi @Dirk Hollenbach ,

Thank you for reaching out and for providing detailed steps and troubleshooting actions.

After reviewing and researching this behavior, here's what I know:

an intentional deprecation of .ppt support on iPadOS?

I have not found any official Microsoft announcement stating that support for .ppt files has been removed. The Microsoft support article “Why can’t I open my PowerPoint file?” states that PowerPoint Mobile supports .ppt and .pps files in read-only mode, which suggests that support was not officially removed.

a bug introduced with the latest updates?

Community discussions and Q&A threads show recent user reports of similar issues after iPadOS updates, but none of them include an official Microsoft acknowledgment or fix yet.

    • You can check it in one of the posts here.

There is no mention in Microsoft’s known issues or Office lifecycle documentation that .ppt support is deprecated on iPadOS 26.

    • For more information about recent Office issues, you can check it right here.

The most effective workaround I managed to find is just as you said:

    • Open the .ppt file on a desktop version of PowerPoint (Windows or Mac) and save it as .pptx (File > Save As > PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx)).
    • Alternatively, upload the .ppt file to PowerPoint for the web and convert it there.
    • The .pptx format is fully supported on iPad and will restore functionality immediately.

The next steps I recommend are:

    • Ensure PowerPoint is updated to the latest version from the App Store.
    • Enable automatic updates so you receive any future fixes.
    • If this impacts your workflow, you can submit feedback directly to Microsoft through the app: PowerPoint > Settings > Help & Feedback > Send Feedback.

Here are the links to the post I found relating to this issue, please take a look at them when you have the time - they might have some useful information you could find:

Important note: The Original Poster (Dirk Hollenbach) has confirmed that the problem has been solved with iOS 26.0.1 and the latest PowerPoint update.

I hope this answers your questions! If you find my suggestions useful, please feel free to mark this answer so others with the same issue can find help from your post. Thank you!
