Had the same issue with my Team. Some workarounds:

Upload the doc to your Files tab. In the Files tab click the 3-dot menu next to the file, select 'Make This A Tab'

If you're storing it on OneDrive, get a shareable link and paste the link in a chat in the channel where you want to make it a tab. A preview of the file will appear in the chat. Click it's 3-dot menu and select 'Make This A Tab'.

Usable workaround until Microsoft sorts the standard method using the + sign in the tab bar.

I am also having the same problem.
I am trying to upload an excel file in .xlsx format to a tab in a teams chat, which i have done many times before, but currently getting the error message saying "FileType is not supported by this app"

I am getting the same error message when trying to add a file that was previously a tab (but had since been removed from Teams), even though it is the exact same file that had worked last week and allowed me to add as a tab.

Have tried the above steps and cleared teams data from file explorer, but still not working :(
    Thanks

    Hello Gustavo,

    thank you for follow up

so you can open it on web teams but not on teams desktop app?

you can try clearing the team's cache and date:

    Please check the following steps:

    1. Quit Microsoft Teams. Right-click the icon and select Quit.
    2. Cut and paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams into File Explorer.
    3. Delete the contents of the entire folder.
    4. Restart Microsoft Teams.

I tried adding the file in a tab to mantain order and access it freely with the Word widget but doesn't recognize it, then I tried with other files from excel of PowerPoint and doesn't let me. All of them are the new format , and yes I can open it regularlly in any teams enviroment.

    Hi Gustavo,

I'm Amro, a fellow Microsoft user and I’m happy to look into this for you.

I understand you are facing an Issue trying to open file in teams desktop app

Please check if you can open the file in web teams:

    https://teams.microsoft.com/

some file types may not be supported by Teams desktop app, such as old office format files (doc, xls, ppt). You can try opening the file in Teams (default), desktop app, or browser to see if it works. If not, you may need to convert the file to a newer format or use a different app to view it.

Please check this for more info:

I hope this helps, please feel free to reply to this if you need any further Assistance.

    Kindly

    Amro
