Has anyone successfully recovered a Microsoft 365 tenant after losing MFA access to the only Global Administrator account?

Hello,

I understand that Microsoft Support is required when the only Global Administrator is locked out by MFA.

My question is different:

Has anyone actually gone through this process successfully?

I would like to know:

  • Was Microsoft able to verify ownership of the tenant?
  • What information did Microsoft request to validate ownership?
  • Was MFA re-registration allowed?
  • Was MFA temporarily disabled?
  • How long did the recovery process take?
  • Is tenant recovery possible when there is only one Global Administrator and no alternative authentication methods?

Context:

  • I am the creator of the tenant.
  • I am the only user and the only Global Administrator.
  • My password works correctly.
  • Microsoft Authenticator is the only blocking factor.
  • There are no backup authentication methods.
  • I still have access to OneDrive from a signed-in Windows device.

I am looking for real experiences from administrators who have recovered access in a similar situation.

Thank you.

    Hello @Jose Leandro Gutiérrez

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Forum.

It's unfortunate that you couldn't access your global administrator account due to lost access to MFA.

As you are the only global administrator in your tenant and you want to recover your global administrator tenant access, in this situation only the Microsoft Data Protection team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.

The Data Protection team, in order to verify the tenant ownership you need to prepare proofs of ownership including:

    • Domain name linked to your Microsoft tenant.
    • Billing information (recent invoice, payment details).
    • Registered contact details (email or phone originally associated with the admin account).
    • Subscription details (plan type, tenant ID if available).
    • Business verification documents (business license, incorporation certificate, tax documents).
    • Any previous support case numbers (if you’ve already contacted Microsoft).

After confirming the ownership of the tenant, upon your request to reset/remove MFA, the Microsoft Data Protection team is able to support you and regain the tenant access.

When you regain your tenant access, you would be able to reconfigure the MFA as a global administrator.

I would like to share how you may reach out to the Data Protection team:

1/ Please call Microsoft Support using the appropriate regional hotline listed here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

Please carefully follow this instruction to ask for Microsoft Data Protection team support:

Depending on your country or region. For some countries, when calling the support number, although there are about 30 seconds opening as something "you can visit the link...." But you can ignore this opening and wait until the option, then "1" as a business email user, "1" again for technical help.

For some countries, it will be an automated conversation like:

First, when you call the hotline, it asks what kind of problem you are worried about.

    Answered: authenticator.

A: What kind of product are you using?

    B: Office 365 for business.

A confirmation: education or company account?

    B: For companies

    A: Are you an administrator?

    B: Yes.

A: Do you have the other admin in your organization?

    B: No.

A: You need one.... Service request?

    B: Yes

2/ Alternatively, there is another way that could help you interact with Microsoft billing team. This involves creating a new temporary Microsoft 365 account to contact the support team online.

Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 Business trial using this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/business/microsoft-365-plans-and-pricing

Once the trial account is created, log in to its Admin Center.

From the Admin Center, open a new Service Request.

In the ticket description, explain that you were locked out of your initial tenant (your.onmicrosoft.com) and you need to reset/remove MFA.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your original account issue is resolved to avoid any future charges.
