How to require password before purchase

We bought Minecraft for our 7yo kid on my Microsoft account. I didn't even know there's such thing as effing "Minecoins". They purchased more than $100 of this sh*t before we woke up, and I can't get refunded or dispute them, which is BS alone as it's been just over an hour now, and most of that time, I've been trying to turn on a way to require a password before making a purchase.

So how do I get an effing human to talk to me?

Use Microsoft’s Contact Support flow now, select the billing/refund options, and request an agent while also locking purchases on every device where the parent account is signed in.

Contact Microsoft about the Minecoin charges

  1. Open Contact Microsoft Support.
  2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used to buy the Minecoins.
  3. Enter Minecraft Minecoins purchased by child — billing/refund.
  4. Select Get Help, then Contact Support.
  5. Choose Microsoft Store/Xbox → Purchases and billing → Refunds and use whichever agent option is offered for your region, such as chat or callback. Microsoft documents this as the route to the best available support option.^1^

Have the order numbers, purchase times, amounts, and payment method ready. Clearly state that a seven-year-old made multiple in-game purchases without parental authorization and that you contacted support immediately.

Also submit the formal refund request:

  1. Open Request a refund for digital games.
  2. Sign in with the purchasing account.
  3. Select each relevant transaction and choose Request a refund.
  4. Explain that the Minecoin purchases were made by a minor without permission, then submit.

Refund requests can take up to 72 hours to process. If the items are unavailable in the online form, use the support route above; online returns are not available for every item or market.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store | Microsoft Support")

If the transactions do not appear in the Microsoft order history, they may have used another platform’s billing system—for example, a console or mobile storefront. In that case, the refund must be requested from that billing platform rather than Microsoft.^3^

Require credentials on the current parent account

Because Minecraft is running under your adult Microsoft account, Family Safety’s child approval setting does not protect purchases made as you. Apply the device-specific control instead.

Windows 11

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select the profile picture → App settings.
  3. Turn Purchase sign-in Off.
  4. Repeat this on every shared Windows device.

Windows 10

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select … → Settings.
  3. Under Purchase sign-in, turn off I want to buy without a password, for faster checkout.
  4. Repeat on every shared device.

Xbox

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Go to System → Settings → Account → Sign-in, security & passkey.
  3. Select Change my sign-in & security preferences → Customize.
  4. Select Ask for my passkey to make purchases → Passkey required.^4^

Do not give the child the account password or Xbox passkey.

Safer long-term setup

Create a separate child Microsoft account, add it to your Microsoft family, and have the child use that account rather than your adult account. Then:

  1. Open the Microsoft Family Safety app or sign in at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Select Manage spending.
  4. Enable Require approval for every purchase.
  5. Optionally enable purchase notifications and activity reporting.^5^

On Xbox, this can also be enabled from the organizer account under Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members → [child] → Privacy & online safety → Xbox Live privacy → View details & customize → Buy & download → Ask a parent: On.^6^
