Preinstalled Microsoft 365 is often only a 30-day trial; if your receipt says that Microsoft 365 or Office was included in the purchase price, activate that entitlement instead of paying to renew the trial.^1^
Check what you purchased
- Review the computer’s receipt or order confirmation.
- “Microsoft 365 trial” or simply “Microsoft 365 preinstalled” normally means the software was installed for evaluation; renewal requires payment.
- “Microsoft 365 Personal/Family — 1 year,” “Office Home,” or another specified paid Office edition indicates that a license should have been included.
- Open Word → File → Account and inspect Product Information and the account shown under Belongs to.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page using the same account used when the computer was first configured. A successfully activated purchase should appear there. Microsoft normally uses this account—not a product key—to activate and reinstall Office.^2^
If the receipt confirms Office was included
- Open Settings → System → Activation and ensure Windows is activated. Starting Office before Windows activation can prevent the included Office purchase from being detected.
- Open Word or Excel.
- On the activation screen, select Sign in and use the Microsoft account you want associated permanently with the purchase.
- Restart the Office applications and check File → Account again.
For an included one-year subscription or one-time Office purchase, the PC can receive a digital product key, so no printed key is required. Signing in adds the product to the Microsoft account.^3^
If the receipt explicitly lists Office but the activation screen still offers only Try or Buy, contact Microsoft Support and provide the receipt as proof of purchase. Microsoft’s guidance specifically recommends this path when an included license is not detected.^1^
If you received a separate product-key card
Redeem the unused 25-character key at the Microsoft 365 setup page shown in Microsoft’s activation instructions, signing in with the Microsoft account that should own the license. Redemption links the purchase to that account; afterward, activate Word or Excel by signing in with the same account.^4^
If only the trial was included
The renewal prompt is expected after the trial expires. You can:
- Purchase or renew Microsoft 365.
- Buy a supported one-time-purchase edition of Office.
- Select Use free at Office.com to use the browser-based Office apps without buying the desktop subscription.
If no action is taken, desktop Office eventually enters reduced-functionality mode: documents can still be opened and printed, but editing and creating documents are disabled.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID]'t-been-activated-to-keep-using-%3Capp%3E-without-interruption,-activate-before-%3Cexpiration-date%3E "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
