Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Because this is a sole-Global-Administrator tenant lockout with no usable MFA method, contact Microsoft Support by phone and request tenant recovery through the Data Protection team; Microsoft must verify ownership before restoring access to the existing tenant.^1^
Open the recovery case
- Open Microsoft’s regional customer-support directory and call the number for your country or region.^2^
- In the automated menu, identify the issue as:
- Authenticator
- Office 365 for business
- Company/business account
- Administrator: Yes
- Another administrator: No
- Service request: Yes
- Tell the agent:
I am the sole Global Administrator of a Microsoft Entra tenant. The only registered MFA method was Microsoft Authenticator on a reset phone, and there are no alternative methods or other administrators. This is a tenant lockout. Please open a service request and route it to the Data Protection/Tenant Recovery team.
This escalation path matches Microsoft’s guidance for a sole administrator who lost Authenticator access.^3^
Prepare for ownership verification
Have the following available when Support contacts you:
- Tenant’s primary domain and
*.onmicrosoft.comdomain, if known - Locked administrator username
- Organization or company name
- Subscription and billing details
- Recent invoices, order numbers, or payment information
- Contact phone number and an alternate email address that you can access
- Domain/DNS ownership information, if requested
- Any existing support or subscription identifiers
Receiving the bill is useful verification evidence, but it does not itself bypass MFA. Microsoft uses a high-assurance identity-verification process and, after ownership is validated, helps a designated Global Administrator recover access to the existing tenant rather than issuing a replacement tenant.^1^
Do not post invoices, tenant identifiers, payment details, or administrator addresses publicly; provide them only through the support case’s secure channel.
If telephone routing does not produce a case
A matching Microsoft Q&A resolution recommends creating a temporary Microsoft 365 trial tenant, signing in to that tenant’s admin center, and opening a support request that explicitly concerns the locked original tenant. Ask for the Data Protection team and cancel the trial after the case is resolved to avoid charges.^4^
Do not attempt to replace the tenant or move subscriptions as a recovery method. The required outcome is an MFA/authentication reset or restored administrative access after ownership verification.
After access is restored
- Re-register Microsoft Authenticator and add at least one independent authentication method.
- Create two or more cloud-only emergency-access Global Administrator accounts using the
*.onmicrosoft.comdomain. - Protect those accounts with phishing-resistant credentials different from the normal administrator’s method, such as FIDO2 passkeys.
- Exclude emergency accounts from Conditional Access policies that could block sign-in during an emergency.
- Store their credentials securely, monitor all use, and test access at least every 90 days.
Microsoft documents these controls specifically to prevent total administrative lockout when normal administrator devices or MFA methods become unavailable.^5^
