Changing an email from organisation to personal

I have been using a btconnect email for many years. It was originally a personal btclick.com email but bt then converted it. I have never worked for BT but it looks like microsoft considers it to be an organisation email. This means that it will not allow me to connect it to my family 365 subscription. Is there any way of converting it without getting another email address?

If Microsoft shows the BT address as a work or school account, that identity cannot be converted into a personal Microsoft account; keep the BT mailbox and use a separate personal Microsoft identity for the Microsoft 365 Family licence.^1^

First determine whether a personal account already exists

Sign in when accepting the Family invitation and enter the BT address:

  • If Microsoft asks “Which account do you want to use?”, select Personal account. This means separate personal and organizational identities exist with the same address.^2^
  • If only Work or school account is available, the BT address currently identifies an organizational account. It cannot itself receive Microsoft 365 Family benefits.
  • If Microsoft permits creation of a personal Microsoft account using the BT address, complete that process and then accept the Family invitation with the new personal identity. The organizational and personal accounts will remain separate.

If you own the Family subscription

Do not share the subscription back to yourself. Sign out of Word, Excel, or another Office application, then sign in for licensing with the personal Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365 Family.

You can continue adding the BT mailbox separately in Outlook. The account used to license Office does not have to be the same account used for email, and Microsoft supports using personal and work/school accounts side by side.^1^

If somebody else owns the Family subscription

  1. The subscription owner signs in to the Microsoft 365 sharing page.
  2. Select Share.
  3. Choose Create link rather than sending the invitation directly to the BT organizational address.
  4. Open that link and sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
  5. Select Join now to join the owner’s family group.

Microsoft 365 Family can be shared with up to five other people, but the recipient must join the subscription owner’s family group. If already in another family group, the recipient must leave that group before accepting.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")

This separate personal identity does not require abandoning the BT email address: continue using the BT account as the mailbox in Outlook while using the personal account for the Family subscription.

Can the BT address be an alias of the personal account?

You can try adding it to the personal Microsoft account:

  1. Open Microsoft account → Your info → Edit account info.
  2. Select Add email.
  3. Enter the BT address and complete verification if Microsoft accepts it.
  4. Optionally select Make primary.

Aliases share the personal account’s subscriptions, storage, contacts, settings, and password.^4^

However, Microsoft may reject the address if it is already attached to another Microsoft account or restricted by the organization. In that case, it cannot be reused as an alias; use another address only as the Microsoft sign-in while retaining the BT mailbox in Outlook.

Asking BT to remove the organizational identity

This is appropriate only if BT confirms that the organizational identity is obsolete. Before requesting removal, ask BT to confirm whether the mailbox, stored files, licences, or any other BT service depends on it, and preserve or migrate anything required. Removing the identity could otherwise interrupt access.

Even if BT removes it, that does not merge its content or history into a personal Microsoft account; personal and organizational accounts are separate identity systems.^2^
