Hello all,

I have been trying to open my work session in Microsoft Teams installed on my personal device for weeks now. However, I always come across the following error:

this app must be protected with an intune policy before you can access company data. please contact your it help desk for more information microsoft teams.

When I asked the helpdesk, they told me that there is no such policy applied and I should be okay to proceed with MS Teams. I keep getting profile of my old username as well but unable to remove it completely.

I tried many approached from clearing cache, looking for the account in my phone settings, reinstalling and installing MS teams app, unsuccessfully.

Is there anything I am missing? I am using Google Pixel 9 with Android 17.

You need to set up Intune Company Portal on your phone and make sure it shows as compliant. Then restart Teams. If it still doesn’t work, contact IT as the Intune policy may need fixing on your account.

    Hi @Ruby Nguyen ,

I followed these instructions. However, I am still faced with the same issue. I noticed something else weird. When I try to add work account in my outlook app in Android phone, the old account still appears as option. I am still unable to completely remove it from the phone.

    What am I missing?

    Good day Amine,

Just to gently clarify before going any further, this forum is separate from Microsoft Support. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts because this is a user‑to‑user support forum.

Since Teams still shows the old account and continues to display the Intune policy message after reinstallation, please try the following:

Note: If your organization doesn't use Microsoft Intune, doesn't require Company Portal and your device has never been enrolled with a work profile, you can skip Options 1 and 2.

Option 1: Remove the existing Company Portal registration and register your current work account again

You can follow the steps provided in the AI Answer below.

Option 2: Remove the device from the Company Portal website

If you cannot access the old account in Company Portal, please sign in to the Company Portal website using the relevant work account > Open Devices > Select the device and choose Remove > Confirm the removal.

Option 3: Remove the old work profile

Open Android Settings > Go to Accounts, passwords and accounts or the Work section.

Locate the old work profile or work account.

Select Remove work profile > Restart the phone.

Please note that this removes work apps and work data associated with that profile, but it doesn't affect your personal apps or files.

Option 4: Remove the old account from Teams

Open Microsoft Teams > Select your profile picture > Select Sign out.

If the old account still appears on the sign-in screen, use the account management option to remove it.

Close Teams completely before opening it again.

Option 5: Ask your IT administrator to review access policies

Although no Intune app protection policy is assigned, I recommend asking your IT administrator to verify the related Conditional Access, policy assignments, app targeting, device registration, sign-in logs and required licenses, as this issue can occur when those settings aren't aligned.

You can share the following articles with your IT administrator for reference and further troubleshooting:

Troubleshoot Microsoft Intune app protection policy deployment - Intune | Microsoft Learn

Review App Protection Policy Logs - Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn

    Option 6: Contact Microsoft Support

If the issue persists after completing all the steps above and your IT administrator confirms that the configuration is correct, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 admin center > Support > Help & Support so they can investigate the device registration, policy evaluation and sign-in logs in your environment.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Remove any stale Android work profile or Company Portal enrollment associated with the old username before registering Teams with the current work account; simply clearing Teams data or reinstalling Teams does not remove device-management state.

    1. Remove the old enrollment in the correct order

Warning: Removing a work profile deletes its work apps and work data from the phone, but it does not remove personal data.

If Intune Company Portal is installed and you can access the old account:

    1. Open Company Portal.
    2. Select Devices and choose this Pixel.
    3. Open the menu and select Remove Device.
    4. Confirm with OK.
    5. In Company Portal’s main menu, select Remove Company Portal, then confirm.
    6. Remove the Android work profile if it remains under Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts or Settings → Security & privacy.
    7. Restart the phone.

That is Microsoft’s documented unenrollment sequence; uninstalling Company Portal without first removing its management relationship can leave the enrollment unresolved.^1^

If the old account no longer works, try the Company Portal website from another device:

    1. Sign in using the relevant work account.
    2. Open Devices.
    3. Select the Pixel and choose Remove—possibly under More (…).
    4. Confirm the removal.^2^

If neither option is available because the former username or organization is inaccessible, its IT administrator must remove the device record. A closely matching Teams-on-Android case found that an old Company Portal enrollment prevented adding another organizational account, and only the previous organization could remove the inaccessible enrollment.^3^

    2. Register the current work account

After the old enrollment and work profile are gone:

    1. Install or update Intune Company Portal.
    2. Sign in using the current work account and complete any requested registration or work-profile setup.
    3. Update Teams, then open it and select the current work or school account.

Company Portal is required on Android when Teams must receive an Intune app-protection policy, including when the personal device is not fully enrolled in Intune.^4^

Do not repeat the Teams cache clearing or reinstall cycle; those steps have already failed and do not correct an old enrollment or policy assignment.

    3. Ask IT to prove which control is blocking access

The displayed message means Teams expects an app-protection policy to be delivered or validated. “No policy is applied” is not enough to distinguish an assignment problem, Conditional Access requirement, stale identity, or failed policy check-in.

Ask the Intune administrator to check:

    1. Intune admin center → Apps → Monitor → App protection status → Assigned users.
    2. Select your current account.
    3. Review:
      • Whether the account has an Intune license.
      • Which policy and applications target it.
      • Whether Teams appears as managed.
      • Device check-in status and last synchronization time.
      • Whether the current account is included in the assigned group or an excluded group.
    4. Confirm that the policy is assigned to a user group, targets Android and Microsoft Teams, and that Teams is receiving the policy under the same current corporate identity.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies the Intune license, user-group assignment, targeted application, consistent corporate identity, and Android Company Portal broker as required checks.^5^

If the organization intentionally requires protected apps, IT must assign the applicable Android app-protection policy to your current account rather than simply confirming that none exists. If it does not intend to require app protection, IT must inspect the Conditional Access configuration that is demanding it.

    Android 17 consideration

The available Microsoft documentation does not explicitly confirm Teams/Intune support for Android 17 on Pixel 9. Intune support is determined principally by the supported Android and application versions rather than by the Pixel model. IT should compare Android 17 with Microsoft’s current supported-platform list before treating this solely as an account issue.^6^

If the old enrollment is removed and Intune reporting still shows no successful Teams check-in, the Microsoft 365 administrator should open a support request and include the affected username, sign-in timestamp, Intune app-protection status, Android version, and screenshots of the exact error.
