    Hi Ava,

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm:

    • When you open the Excel desktop app, what exact error message do you receive?
    • Does the issue occur only in Excel, or are other Office apps (such as Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook) affected as well?
    • In File > Account, does your school account appear as signed in, and does Office show Product Activated, Unlicensed Product, or a message asking you to activate Office?

In the meantime, you can also check the licensing details first:

1/ Sign in to My account page with your school account and go to Subscriptions.

2/ Check whether your assigned license includes Microsoft 365 Apps or Office desktop apps.

If you do not see Office desktop apps included in the license, or there is no Download/ Install Office option in Apps and devices tab available, it's possible that your school account has only been assigned a license that allows access to the web versions of Office. In that case, you would need to contact your school's IT administrator to confirm whether you're entitled to use the desktop Office applications and, if so, whether the appropriate license can be assigned to your account.

On the other hand, if your license does include Office desktop apps and the Download Office option is available, then the issue is more likely related to activation, sign-in, cached credentials, or account conflicts on the device. In that case, you may consider trying the troubleshooting steps outlined in the AI answer.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

If the school account works in Office on the web but not in the desktop app, the most likely causes are:

    1. The account does not have a desktop Office license assigned.
      • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Subscriptions page with the school account.
      • Check whether The latest desktop version of Office appears under the license details.
      • If it is missing, the school’s Microsoft 365 administrator must assign the correct education license.
    2. Cached sign-in or identity data on Windows is blocking desktop activation. Try this in order:
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
      • If the school account is listed, select it, choose Disconnect, then connect it again with the same school account.
      • Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.
      • In Windows Credentials and Generic Credentials, remove entries related to the Microsoft 365 school account.
      • Restart Windows.
      • Open Excel and sign in again with the school account.
    3. Office needs to refresh its activation state.
      • Open an Office app.
      • Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • Then sign out and sign back in with the school account.
    4. If the device previously used another Microsoft account, account conflicts may be causing the problem.
      • In Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, remove unused work or school accounts.
      • Reconnect only the account that has the school license.

If the license check shows web-only access, this is not fixable from the device. The school IT administrator must assign a license that includes desktop apps.
