I do not have permission to access my OneDrive files when I am logged into OneDrive online

I am logged into my OneDrive online account. When I click on one of my own files, an error message pops up saying that I do not have permission to access that file. How do I fix this? Thanks!

Sign out of Microsoft services in the browser, then sign back in with the exact personal Microsoft account that originally stored the files.

    1. Eliminate an account-session mismatch

Having OneDrive open does not necessarily mean the browser is using the account that owns the files, especially if personal and work/school accounts are both used.

    1. In OneDrive online, select the profile picture in the upper-right corner and note the displayed email address.
    2. Sign out.
    3. Close all Microsoft 365 and OneDrive browser tabs.
    4. Open a new browser window and sign in with the personal Microsoft account that originally uploaded the files.
    5. Open My files and try the file again.

Microsoft specifically recommends checking another Microsoft account when files appear under the wrong account context.^1^

    2. If only one file or folder is affected

The item may be shared, inherited from another folder, or accessed through a sharing entry rather than directly from My files.

    1. Select the item once without opening it.
    2. Select the Information icon in the upper-right corner.
    3. Under Has Access, select Manage access.
    4. Check whether the item shows sharing links or access inherited from another location.
    5. If the file is listed under Shared but not under My files, access is controlled by its actual owner. That owner must restore access or provide a new sharing link.

For files that you own, Manage access displays existing people and sharing links and allows those sharing settings to be changed.^2^

    3. If every file is affected

    Check the exact message:

    • If it says “Your account is currently unavailable,” the account may be temporarily blocked. Use Microsoft’s account-reactivation process. A recent security verification or unusually large amount of sharing can take up to 24 hours to clear.^3^
    • If OneDrive opens normally but every file reports a permission error even after signing into the confirmed owning account, use Contact Microsoft Support from the personal-account support section. Microsoft directs personal OneDrive users there for technical support.^4^

Include the following with the support request:

    • The exact error wording
    • Whether it affects one file, one folder, or every file
    • Whether the item appears under My files or Shared
    • A screenshot with email addresses and other personal information hidden

Do not change Windows Security permissions or take ownership of the local OneDrive folder for this web-only problem. Those procedures apply when files fail through Windows File Explorer or the sync client, not when access fails on the OneDrive website.^5^
