Keep the Microsoft 365 subscription linked to your Gmail address, and cancel or turn off recurring billing for the subscription linked to the BTConnect address before considering deletion of that Microsoft account.
1. Protect anything stored under the BTConnect account
Before cancelling, sign in with the BTConnect Microsoft account and copy any OneDrive files or other information you need to the Gmail-linked account or your computer.
Cancelling Microsoft 365 reduces the old account’s cloud-storage allowance. If its storage remains over the free allowance, OneDrive syncing and Outlook.com email can be restricted, and files may eventually be deleted.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
Also check which Microsoft account is currently signed into Word, Excel, and OneDrive, so you do not accidentally remove access before moving the required files.
2. Stop charges on the BTConnect subscription
- Open the Microsoft 365 subscription page:
https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365
- Sign in specifically with the Microsoft account whose username is the BTConnect address.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Manage.
- Choose Cancel subscription or Upgrade or Cancel.
- Review the cancellation page and select I don’t want my subscription.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
If the page instead displays Turn on recurring billing, renewal is already disabled. The subscription will remain usable until its displayed expiry date, and no further automatic charge should occur. Turning off recurring billing does not immediately remove the remaining paid period.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")
Then sign out and repeat the check using the Gmail-linked Microsoft account. Confirm that this is the subscription you want to retain and that it shows the expected billing or expiry date.
3. Keep the two account arrangements separate
The existing Microsoft 365 subscription cannot be transferred from the BTConnect Microsoft account to the Gmail Microsoft account.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Transfer a Microsoft 365 subscription to another account | Microsoft Support") Cancelling the old subscription is therefore the correct way to prevent future duplicate charges; it does not merge the accounts or move their files.
It is usually safer to leave the old Microsoft account open temporarily after cancelling its subscription. This allows access to purchase records and any data that was not moved. Deleting the account itself is separate from cancelling Microsoft 365 and is not required to stop subscription billing.
If cancellation is unavailable
- If Manage, Cancel, or payment options appear, Microsoft is managing the subscription.
- If those options are missing or limited, it may have been purchased through Apple, Google, Amazon, or another retailer. In that case, cancellation and billing must be handled by that provider.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription? | Microsoft Support")
- If Microsoft billed the subscription but cancellation still fails, use Contact Support from Microsoft’s refund-support page and select the billing/subscription route.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
If the old subscription has recently renewed and you want the latest payment returned, cancel it first. Refund eligibility is assessed automatically during cancellation; cancellation does not always produce a refund.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
