Retrieve the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key from the Microsoft account associated with the Dell laptop, then connect its drive to another Windows computer and unlock it using that key.
1. Find the recovery key
- On another device, open:
https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to set up or sign in to the Dell laptop.
- If multiple keys appear, note the Key ID for each. You will match its first eight digits with the ID displayed when opening the removed drive.
- If someone else originally set up the laptop or enabled BitLocker, check that person’s Microsoft account too.
- Also check whether the key was:
- Printed
- Saved as a text file on a USB drive
- Stored in a work or school account
These are Microsoft’s supported recovery-key locations. On Windows 11 version 24H2, the recovery screen may also show a hint identifying the associated Microsoft account. ^1^
For a work or school device, sign in to the organization’s My Account portal from another device, open Devices, select the affected device, and choose View Keys. If that option is unavailable, contact the organization’s IT administrator. ^2^
2. Connect and unlock the drive
Have a repair technician remove the storage drive from the faulty laptop if necessary, then connect it to another Windows computer using a compatible enclosure or adapter.
Do not initialize, format, or erase the drive if Windows prompts you—those actions can destroy the data.
After Windows assigns it a drive letter:
- Open File Explorer → This PC.
- Double-click the locked drive.
- Select More options → Enter recovery key, if shown.
- Compare the displayed Recovery Key ID with the key listed in your Microsoft account.
- Enter the matching 48-digit recovery key.
- Copy the required files to a different drive immediately.
Alternatively, open Command Prompt as administrator and replace D: and the example value with the actual drive letter and recovery key:
manage-bde.exe -status D:
manage-bde.exe -unlock D: -recoverypassword ^

Microsoft documents unlocking a BitLocker drive after connecting it as a secondary drive through File Explorer, Control Panel, PowerShell, or manage-bde. ^3^
If the key cannot be found
Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a missing BitLocker recovery key. Without the correct key or another previously configured unlock method, the encrypted files cannot be accessed. Resetting or reinstalling Windows removes the files and therefore does not provide data recovery. ^1^
