Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard and go to the Manage your payments page. Select Investigate for the unrecognized charge.
- Check the common causes Microsoft lists for unexpected charges:
- recurring billing on a subscription
- a purchase by someone known to the cardholder
- a previously declined charge being retried
- a pre-order or split order shipping
- an in-app purchase
- If the charge does not appear on the Microsoft account, contact the bank or card issuer immediately and report the card as stolen or compromised. This is the step that helps stop additional fraudulent charges.
- If the card was replaced but charges continued, that can happen because some merchants receive updated card details through card-network account updater programs. For Skype, Microsoft documents that Visa Account Updater and MasterCard Automatic Billing Updater can update card details for auto-renewing charges.
- If the charge is tied to a Microsoft purchase and a refund is needed, use Microsoft Support. If the charge is unauthorized on another person’s account, the correct path is a dispute or chargeback through the bank or card issuer.
Important: disputing only the current charge does not prevent future fraudulent charges. The bank or payment provider should also block or replace the compromised card.
