Purview - Contextual Summary

We are in the GCC and when we run simulations of auto labeling, I can see that it would apply labels to documents, but some of these are hard to figure out what it thinks matches the SIT. We had been told that when reviewing items in the simulation that we should see a contextual summary tab that would show the actual part of the document that it thought matched the SITs in the labeling simulation. I even thought I remember seeing something similar when we had first looked at labeling policies, but it is no longer there. Without it, we are having a hard time determining if the labels are correct or not since we aren't always able to determine what it detected in the document that it thought matched. Is this something that we should have or is it something that will be available in the near future or is this just something we will not get in the GCC?

Contextual Summary should be available for auto-labeling simulation matches involving SharePoint Online or OneDrive files; assign the reviewer the Data Classification Content Viewer role, then reopen the simulation’s sample items to view the matched text.

Verify access and open the results

    1. In the Microsoft Purview portal, assign the reviewing account the Data Classification Content Viewer role. Permission to manage an auto-labeling policy does not automatically grant permission to view matched content.
    2. Go to Solutions → Information Protection → Policies → Auto-labeling policies.
    3. Select the policy running in simulation mode.
    4. Select Summary → View details.
    5. On Simulation overview, select Review sample items.
    6. Open a sampled SharePoint or OneDrive file and look for its Contextual summary or matched-content view.

Microsoft documents the Content Viewer role as required to view matched text and notes that review options can vary by portal experience. Sample items are retained for 30 days, so export needed results before editing or restarting the simulation.^1^

Confirm that the item is eligible

Contextual Summary in MIP auto-labeling simulations is documented for:

    • SharePoint Online files
    • OneDrive files

It is not documented for Exchange items in this simulation experience. Therefore, an email match can appear in simulation totals without providing the same Contextual Summary experience available for SharePoint and OneDrive.^2^

    Classifier support also differs:

    Classifier Contextual Summary
    Built-in SIT Supported
    Custom SIT Supported
    Fingerprint SIT Not supported
Exact Data Match SIT Not supported
    Named entities Not supported
    Credential scan Not supported
    Supported built-in trainable classifiers Supported
    Custom trainable classifier Not supported

There is another important limitation: files classified before the feedback experience was enabled for the tenant might not have Contextual Summary data. Test with a newly created or newly updated SharePoint/OneDrive file containing a controlled match, then allow the simulation to evaluate it. Restarting a simulation reevaluates policy matches, but does not itself reclassify existing content after a SIT change.^2^ ^1^

    GCC status

The GCC service description lists both of these capabilities as Available:

    • Automatic classification and labeling for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business.
    • Enhanced simulations and location support for auto-labeling in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.^3^

However, that GCC table does not name Contextual Summary separately. Consequently, the missing tab should not immediately be treated as a general GCC exclusion. If all of the following are true, open a Microsoft support case:

    • The match is for a SharePoint or OneDrive file.
    • The classifier type supports Contextual Summary.
    • The reviewer has the Data Classification Content Viewer role.
    • The file was created or updated after the feature was enabled.
    • The simulation is complete and still within its sample-retention period.
    • The option remains absent in Review sample items.

Include the tenant environment, policy name, simulation status, workload, classifier/SIT type, example file timestamp, screenshots, and confirmation of the assigned role. This gives Support enough information to distinguish a GCC portal rollout issue from a tenant-specific service problem.
