If your Microsoft account is classified as a child or teen account, leaving the family group will not make Minecraft multiplayer available; a parent or guardian must add the account to a Microsoft family and enable its Xbox multiplayer permissions.
If your account is underage
- Ask a parent or guardian to create or sign in to an adult Microsoft account.
- Have them open the Microsoft Family portal at
https://account.microsoft.com/familyand add your Microsoft account as a family member. Family organizers can manage members and permissions.^1^ - The adult organizer should open
https://www.xbox.com/user/settings/privacy-and-safety, select your profile, and set:- You can join multiplayer games → Allow
- You can join cross-network play → Allow
- For Realms, also allow the relevant clubs permission.
- Save the changes.
- On the Windows PC, sign out of the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher. Sign back into all three using the same Microsoft account, then reopen Minecraft and test whether Multiplayer and Realms are available. Xbox notes that signing out and back in may be required after privacy changes.^3^
If parental consent was previously removed when you left the family, Microsoft may request consent again the next time you sign in. Only the adult who originally granted consent may be able to manage it.^4^
If your account should be an adult account
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and check Your info to ensure the birth date is correct. Do not enter a false birth date.
- Confirm that
https://account.microsoft.com/familyshows you as a standalone user rather than a child in an old family. - Open
https://www.xbox.com/user/settings/privacy-and-safety. - If the page is editable, set:
- Join multiplayer games → Allow
- Cross-network play → Allow
- The relevant communication permission → Friends or Everyone
- Save, sign out of the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher, and then sign back in with the same account. Test Minecraft again.
If the correct adult birth date is recorded but Xbox still identifies the account as a child/teen account—or does not let you edit the privacy settings—this is an account-classification issue that needs Microsoft account/Xbox support rather than another Minecraft reinstall.
Contact Microsoft
