Remove tenant from a domain which you don't have admin rights to

I have purchased a domain name alongside Microsoft 365 to allow me to create a professional email address for the domain. When I went to create the address I got an error message saying there was already an email address assigned to that domain. I contacted the domain hosts and they said the domain email tenant needs to be removed with Microsoft so that I can proceed. I need some assistance to do this.

    Hello

In Microsoft 365, a domain can only be associated with one tenant at a time. If the domain is currently connected to another Microsoft 365 tenant, it must first be removed from that tenant before it can be added to your current Microsoft 365 subscription.

To help identify where the domain is currently registered within Microsoft 365, could you please confirm:

1/ What is the domain name you're trying to add?

2/ Do you have access to any previous Microsoft 365 tenant that may have used this domain?

3/ What is the exact error message you receive when adding the domain?

4/ Is this a brand-new domain purchase, or has the domain been used previously for Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Teams, or another Microsoft service?

If you no longer have access to the Microsoft 365 tenant that currently owns the domain, Microsoft Support may be able to assist with releasing the domain after verifying your ownership. Please provide the domain name and the exact error message (or a screenshot) you receive when adding the domain.

You can contact Microsoft Support from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center by going to Help & support and creating a support request

Please let me know if I can do anything more for you.

    Kind regards,

A domain can belong to only one Microsoft Entra tenant, so first test whether the existing tenant is an unmanaged directory that you can take over; if no Become the Admin option appears, open a Microsoft 365 support case to recover the managed tenant or have the domain association removed.^1^

Path 1: Take over an unmanaged directory

An unmanaged directory can be created when someone uses an address on the domain to register for a Microsoft self-service cloud service. If that is what happened:

    1. Open the Power BI website and select Start free.
    2. Register using an address on your domain, such as [Email].
    3. Complete the emailed verification.
    4. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin takeover portal with that account.
    5. If Become the Admin appears, select Yes, I want to be the admin.
    6. Add the requested DNS TXT record through your domain registrar. This proves control of the domain.
    7. After verification, you become an administrator of that unmanaged directory.^2^

    To release the domain afterward:

    1. In the old directory, create an administrator account using its default .onmicrosoft.com domain.
    2. Assign that account the required administrator role and sign in with it.
    3. Change or remove every user, group, email/proxy address, and application identifier that uses your custom domain.
    4. In the Microsoft 365 admin center → Domains, select the custom domain and choose Remove.
    5. Return to your new Microsoft 365 tenant and add the domain, then publish the new verification TXT record.

Microsoft requires at least the Domain Name Administrator role to manage domains. The administrator account used for deletion must use the .onmicrosoft.com domain or another domain—not the custom domain being removed.^1^

Path 2: Recover or release a managed tenant

If Become the Admin does not appear, or Microsoft reports that takeover is unsupported, treat the old directory as a managed tenant. You cannot remove its domain using credentials from your new tenant.

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center using the administrator account for your new subscription.
    2. Select Help & Support.
    3. Create a request titled:
Custom domain belongs to an inaccessible Microsoft 365 tenant
    4. Include:
      • The exact error displayed when adding the domain.
      • That you are the current registered owner and control its public DNS.
      • That you have no administrator access to the tenant currently holding it.
      • A request to recover administrative access or release the custom domain from the inaccessible tenant.
    5. Be prepared to add a Microsoft-provided DNS TXT record and provide business or domain-ownership documentation.

For a locked tenant, Microsoft directs customers to open a support ticket; its Data Protection Team can reset an administrator’s credentials or help establish ownership of a normal managed tenant.^3^ A closely matching case was resolved after Microsoft’s Data Protection team removed the verified domain from the inaccessible tenant.^4^

If the admin center does not allow you to create a ticket, use Microsoft’s business customer-support contact route.^5^

Do not delete or replace existing MX records until Microsoft releases the domain and you are ready to configure mail in the new tenant; premature DNS changes could interrupt any currently routed email.
