Use a new Outlook.com address or an unrestricted personal address such as Gmail or Yahoo as the new alias, because an address Microsoft identifies as organization-managed may not be added to a personal Microsoft account.^1^

    Change the account email

    1. Open the Microsoft account Manage how you sign in page: https://account.live.com/names/manage
    2. Sign in to the personal Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription.
    3. Select Add email.
    4. Either:
      • Create a new Outlook.com address, or
      • Add a personal, non-Microsoft address that is not already connected to another Microsoft account.
    5. Complete the email verification.
    6. Beside the new alias, select Make primary.

An alias changes the address used to sign in without creating a different account. Your subscription, OneDrive storage, contacts, settings, and other account data remain attached to the same Microsoft account.^2^

    What the organization warning means

Microsoft can classify an address as organizational based on its email provider or domain infrastructure, even when the address is used personally. The matching Q&A case confirms that this classification is by design and cannot simply be changed from the personal-account alias page.^3^

If the address genuinely belongs to an employer, school, or Microsoft 365 organization, its administrator may also restrict its use. Personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts cannot be merged.^4^

    Before removing the old address

Confirm that the new alias works for signing in and is marked primary before removing anything.

Be especially careful if the old address ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com: removing a Microsoft-domain alias permanently deletes that address, and it cannot be reclaimed.^5^

If the new address is needed only to receive security codes—not as a sign-in name—add it as a verification method instead of an alias. Microsoft distinguishes verification addresses from account aliases.^2^
