Welcome BT,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you're unable to turn on File History in Control Panel with your USB drive on Windows 11.
To help narrow this down, could you please share:
- What happens when you select Turn on? For example, is the button greyed out, does nothing happen, or do you see an error message (please share the exact text)?
- In File Explorer, does the USB drive have a drive letter, and is it formatted as NTFS? To check the format, right-click the drive and select Properties.
Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following:
1, Make sure the services File History needs are running.
- Press Windows + R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find File History Service. Make sure its Startup type is Manual or Automatic, then right-click it and select Start.
- Do the same for Windows Search, which File History also depends on.
2, Reset the File History configuration on the PC.
- Close Control Panel.
- Press Windows + R, type
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistoryand press Enter. - Rename the Configuration folder to Configuration.old.
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > File History again and try Turn on.
3, Repair Windows system files.
- In Terminal (Admin), run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish - Then run
sfc /scannow - Restart the PC and try File History again
Looking forward to your update.
