Microsoft Office 365 Subscription - Change Payment Method

I am experiencing difficulties changing the payment method for my Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

I previously paid for my subscription through my O2 mobile account. However, I now wish to stop using O2 as my payment provider and pay directly using my debit card.

I have tried updating my payment method through my Microsoft account, but I keep receiving the following error message:

"We’re sorry, but we couldn’t update your payment method. Please contact customer support for help with renewing your subscription."

I am also unable to remove or unlink the existing O2 payment arrangement from my Microsoft account.

Could someone please advise me on how to:

Remove or unlink O2 as the payment provider for my Microsoft 365 subscription.

Add my debit card as the new payment method.

Ensure that my existing Microsoft 365 subscription remains active without interruption.

I would appreciate clear, step-by-step guidance on how to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your help.

    Hi Marion Sherriffs,

I understand that your main concern is changing the payment provider without losing access to Microsoft 365.

Because the subscription was billed through O2, O2 must first stop the renewal or close its billing arrangement. Before making any changes, ask O2 to confirm both the cancellation status and the final date of coverage. Cancelling recurring billing should not normally end access immediately; the subscription should remain usable until the current paid period expires.

After that date, sign in to the same Microsoft account and purchase Microsoft 365 Personal directly with your debit card. There is no need to create a new Microsoft account, and using the existing account will help preserve access to the files and services associated with it.

To avoid being charged twice, do not start a separate Microsoft subscription until O2 has confirmed when its subscription will end.

As community members cannot access billing records or unlink a mobile provider, Microsoft Support would need to investigate if O2 has already released the subscription but the Microsoft account still does not allow a new purchase. Thank you so much for your understanding.

If the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription was bought through O2, the billing is managed by that provider, not in the Microsoft account billing settings. In that case, O2 must handle cancellation, renewal, and payment-method changes, and Microsoft cannot directly switch that subscription to a debit card.

Steps to confirm and resolve it:

    1. Sign in to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services using the Microsoft account tied to the subscription.
    2. Find the Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • If Manage, Cancel, or Change payment appears, the subscription is billed by Microsoft.
      • If those billing options are missing or limited, the subscription is managed by a third party such as O2.
    3. If it is managed by O2:
      • Remove or unlinking O2 cannot be completed in Microsoft billing settings.
      • Contact O2 or use the O2 account/subscription settings to cancel or stop renewal for that Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • Keep the current subscription active until the end of its paid term to avoid interruption.
    4. After the O2-managed subscription is cancelled or reaches expiry, buy or renew Microsoft 365 directly with Microsoft using a debit card through the Microsoft account subscription flow.
    5. If the subscription is actually billed by Microsoft and recurring billing is on:
      • Go to Manage > Change how you pay.
      • Select Add a new way to pay and add the debit card.
      • If there is a past-due balance, select Pay now first.
    6. If the error continues when trying to change payment details in Microsoft billing, use Contact Support from Microsoft Support and select the billing/subscription path.

    Important details:

    • A third-party purchased subscription cannot be converted directly to Microsoft billing while keeping the same billing arrangement active.
    • If Change how you pay is not shown, recurring billing may be off, or the subscription may already be fully paid through its current term.
    • If the subscription becomes past due, sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services and use Pay now. Gift cards, subscription cards, and Microsoft account balance cannot be used to pay a past-due subscription.
