I am getting Invitation Redemption Error after being prompted to switch to invited email address

I'm trying to accept invitation to Teams group in an email. I click on the link to join the team. I login, same as email address I received the invite. I then see another email address already logged in (even when I go incognito in browser, I read online somewhere that the cloud online has permanently linked an unrelated email address to my other email address, which I received the invite).

When I click on "Switch", thats when I see "Invitation Redemption Error" and to please try again. Obviously trying again later will not yield a different result.

I've gone through all the "answers" on here and no one seems to be able to resolve this?

its 2026 November so does anyone have an answer?

I've done the following:

  1. Removed microsoft account on login/passwords on Android
  2. Cleared cache and storage data on Teams. Force stopped it, uninstalled it. Reinstalled it, no change
  3. Restarted the phone and repeated the above multiple times
  4. I read somewhere online to try login to Teams on desktop to "bypass" Switch screen. This doesn't change anything unfortunately and I saw the switch screen yet again even when my desktop has no history of my logged in email or the email address where I received the invitation
  5. I've done incognito on desktop as well and I still cannot login

What I don't understand is when I logon to microsoft with second email (where the invite was sent to), in the microsoft profile I see the first email attached to it. So i'm wondering why this has occurred? The cloud on microsoft seemed to have mashed the first email and the second email together and I'm forever stuck on a loop that whenever I try to login to microsoft with the second email address, I always see the first email address and its details attached, EVEN when I have manually signed out of the first one on both android and on desktop.

So this is getting messy and complex. Can someone possibly help me with this at all?

Help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ask the inviting organization’s Microsoft Entra administrator to inspect your guest record and, if it was redeemed with or is bound to the wrong identity, reset its redemption status and issue a new invitation.

Because the failure occurs on Android, desktop, and private browsing, repeating cache removal, reinstalling Teams, or signing out locally is unlikely to change the server-side guest identity.

    Administrator-side fix

A Helpdesk Administrator or User Administrator in the organization that invited you should:

    1. Open Microsoft Entra admin center → Entra ID → Users.
    2. Find the guest account using the exact address that received the invitation.
    3. Record:
      • Invitation state—for example, pending or accepted.
      • The guest’s stored Email, Other emails, and sign-in identity.
      • The complete error/AADSTS code, correlation ID, and timestamp from the failed redemption.
    4. If the guest record shows the wrong redemption identity or was previously redeemed against the wrong account:
      • Open the user’s Overview tab.
      • Under My Feed, in the B2B collaboration tile, select Reset redemption status.
      • Select Reset to resend the invitation.
    5. Only if the guest should redeem using a different address:
      • Select Edit properties.
      • Update Email and add the intended address under Other emails.
      • Save, then reset the redemption status.
    6. Open the newly generated invitation from the mailbox that received it and sign in with that identity.

Resetting redemption preserves the existing guest object ID, group memberships, and application assignments; deleting and recreating the guest is therefore not the first choice. Microsoft documents Helpdesk Administrator as the least-privileged role that can perform the reset.^1^

    Why the other address appears

If both addresses appear in Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, they may be aliases of one personal Microsoft account rather than two accounts. Aliases share the same password, contacts, storage, subscriptions, and account settings, so signing in with either alias opens the same underlying account.^2^

That is different from having a personal Microsoft account and a Microsoft 365 work or school account with the same sign-in address. Those account types cannot be merged, although they can coexist.^3^

Do not remove an alias merely to troubleshoot the invitation. Alias removal changes the Microsoft account itself and is unnecessary if the Entra guest record is what is bound incorrectly.

If the reset does not resolve it

The inviting administrator should use the exact AADSTS error, correlation ID, and timestamp to distinguish these cases:

    • Email and UPN differ: An invitation sent to a non-UPN email can be redeemed through the original email invitation, but later sign-ins may fail unless email is enabled as an alternate login ID. The administrator should verify the invited email against your actual user principal name (UPN) and, where appropriate, reinvite the UPN.^4^
    • Duplicate proxyAddresses value: In Microsoft 365 admin center, search the invited address under:
      1. Users → All users
      2. Users → Contacts
      3. Teams & groups → Active teams & groups
If another user, group, or contact owns that address, merely locating it is not enough. The administrator must remove or change the conflicting address; Microsoft specifies using Microsoft Graph when removing it from the relevant user or contact object. The guest can then be invited again.^5^
    • Federation or external-collaboration policy: The error details may show that the home tenant has blocked email-verified users, the account is absent from a federated domain, or the inviting tenant restricts external collaboration. The relevant tenant administrator must correct that policy or identity state.^5^

Message to send the Teams owner

Please forward this to your Microsoft Entra Helpdesk Administrator or User Administrator. My Teams guest invitation fails at Switch with “Invitation Redemption Error” on multiple clean clients. Please inspect my guest record under Entra ID → Users, verify the invited email and redemption identity, and, if it was redeemed or bound to the wrong identity, use Overview → B2B collaboration → Reset redemption status and resend the invitation.

    Dear @Adam Zheng ,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Thank you for trying the troubleshooting steps above.

First of all, I would like to clarify that this is a community forum where users help one another. No one here, including myself, has access to your Microsoft account, the inviting organization's tenant, or the guest invitation records.

Based on your description, you've already performed many of the troubleshooting steps that would normally be recommended, including using private/incognito browsing sessions, signing out, clearing caches, reinstalling Teams, and testing on multiple devices. Because the issue persists across different browsers and platforms, this does not appear to be a typical local cache or Teams client problem.

From the information provided, the behavior seems more consistent with an issue involving the guest invitation redemption process in Microsoft Entra B2B collaboration, where the invited identity, guest account, or invitation record may not be matching correctly during the redemption process.

Microsoft documents invitation redemption and guest-access troubleshooting in the following articles: Microsoft Entra B2B collaboration invitation redemption and Troubleshoot common issues with Microsoft Entra B2B collaboration

According to similar cases (Team Redemption error, Guest users unable to accept invitation, I get an error that says: "Invitation redemption failed;) reported by other users, this often requires action from the organization that sent the invitation rather than from the invited user.

At this point, I would recommend contacting the administrator of the organization that invited you and asking them to:

    • Verify that the guest account associated with your email address was created correctly
    • Remove any existing pending guest account for your email address
    • Send a brand-new invitation
    • Review whether there are any guest account or invitation redemption issues within their Microsoft Entra ID tenant

I appreciate the effort you've already put into troubleshooting. Since the issue occurs across multiple devices and browsers, the next area to review would be the guest invitation and account setup within the inviting organization's environment.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful.

I'm here and happy to help! Thank you for your kindness and patience!
