Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Sign in with the education account that owns the Office license, verify that the license is active, and then run Online Repair if Office still cannot verify it.
1. Verify the education license
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File → Account.
- Sign in with the work or school account supplied by your educational institution.
- Check the same account on the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page:
https://account.microsoft.com/services - Confirm that Microsoft 365 or Office is listed and active.
Using an account that has no Office entitlement will not activate the installation. If the education license is missing or expired, contact your school’s Microsoft 365 administrator; repairing Office cannot add a license. ^1^
2. Remove conflicting Office installations
Multiple Office versions can cause activation conflicts.
- Search Windows for Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Search the installed-program list for Office.
- If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall versions you no longer use.
- Restart Windows, open Word, and sign in again with the licensed education account. ^1^
3. Run Online Repair
For Windows 11:
- Right-click Start → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots beside it, then Modify.
- For a Click-to-Run installation, select Online Repair → Repair.
- Follow the prompts, restart the computer, and open Word again.
For Windows 10:
- Right-click Start → Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office, then Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Restart the computer afterward.
Online Repair is more complete than Quick Repair and repairs the entire Office suite. ^2^
If activation still fails
- Correct Windows date, time, and time zone under Settings → Time & language → Date & time.
- Right-click Word in the Start menu and select Run as administrator once.
- If this is Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 or later, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter offered in Microsoft’s activation guidance. ^1^
- If Office came with a new computer but no Office product appears under the account, it may be an unactivated trial rather than a permanent license. Preinstalled purchases are activated by signing in with the Microsoft account used to claim the offer. ^3^
