Dear David Felix,

I understand you need to update the payment method for your Microsoft 365 business subscription but receive the message, “Switch to an account with permissions.”

This message indicates that the account currently signed in does not have permission to access that admin page. It does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your password or payment card.

I recommend the following steps:

Step 1: Sign in with the correct business account

Open an InPrivate or Incognito browser window, go to Microsoft 365 admin center, and sign in with the work account that manages your company’s subscription. If prompted to choose between a personal account and a work or school account, select Work or school account.

If you manage more than one organization, make sure you are accessing the organization that owns the subscription.

Step 2: Check your billing permissions

If you can sign in but still cannot open the billing page, ask your administrator or billing owner to review your access. The required permissions depend on your billing account type:

For a Microsoft Online Subscription Agreement (MOSA), payment management generally requires the Billing Administrator or Global Administrator role.

For a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), billing permissions are managed separately. Ask the billing profile owner to check whether you have Billing profile owner or contributor access to the profile associated with your subscription.

For MCA accounts, a Global Administrator role alone does not automatically provide all billing permissions. Microsoft explains billing access in Understand your Microsoft business billing account.

Step 3: Update the payment method after access is confirmed

For an MCA subscription, go to Billing > Billing accounts, select the relevant account, open Billing profiles, and select the profile associated with your subscription. You can then change the payment method used by that profile.

Microsoft provides the instructions here: Manage your Microsoft business billing profiles.

Could you confirm whether you are your organization’s administrator and whether you can open the admin center homepage, or if this error appears immediately after signing in? This will help me identify the next step.

The message means you are signed in, but the current account lacks permission to manage that Microsoft 365 business subscription’s billing; sign in with the purchasing administrator account or ask that administrator to grant you billing access.

If this is an organization-managed account

Contact your Microsoft 365 administrator—typically your internal IT help desk, business owner, or the person who originally purchased the subscription. The original purchaser receives administrator permissions by default.^1^

For a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) billing account, a billing profile owner can grant access as follows:

  1. Open the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  2. Go to Billing > Billing accounts.
  3. Select the billing account, then Billing profiles.
  4. Select the relevant billing profile.
  5. Open Billing profile roles > Assign roles.
  6. Add your work account and assign Billing profile contributor or Billing profile owner.
  7. Sign out and sign back in, then return to the billing page.

A contributor can edit the billing profile and payment details; only an owner can grant billing-profile roles.^2^

After access is granted, update the payment method under:

Billing > Billing accounts > select the account > Billing profiles > select the profile > Payment method > Edit or Replace > Save.^2^

If you purchased the business subscription yourself

The account used to purchase or create the Microsoft 365 business subscription should be a Global Administrator by default.^3^

Sign out of all Microsoft accounts, close the browser, and sign back in using the exact work account used when the subscription was purchased. A personal Microsoft account and a work account can use the same email address but represent different account contexts.

If the original purchasing account still receives the permission message and there is no other administrator, contact Microsoft business support for administrator-account recovery. Do not post card numbers, passwords, verification codes, or tenant details publicly.

If this is actually a personal Microsoft 365 subscription

Do not use the Microsoft 365 admin center. Personal subscription payment methods are managed from the Microsoft account’s Payment options page; business payment methods are linked to a billing profile and require a work account with billing permission.^4^
