Connect the laptop to the internet from the lock screen, then select Sign-in options and use either your usual Windows Hello PIN or the newly changed Microsoft account password under the matching icon.
Try the correct sign-in method
A Windows PIN is different from a Microsoft account password; resetting the Microsoft account password does not change the PIN. ^1^
- Dismiss the error by selecting OK.
- Select the Network/Wi-Fi icon at the lower-right of the sign-in screen.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or connect the laptop directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Windows can require internet access to validate Microsoft-account credentials. ^2^
- Select Sign-in options below the entry box:
- Select the keypad/PIN icon and enter the PIN you normally used on this laptop.
- If the PIN option is unavailable, select the password/key icon and enter the new Microsoft account password you already created.
- Check that the account shown on the screen is yours before entering the credential.
If I forgot my PIN appears, select it and complete the identity check to create a new PIN. This option is available for Microsoft accounts; it does not perform another Microsoft account password reset. ^1^
If neither the PIN nor password works
Start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking; PIN and biometric sign-in are unavailable there, so use the Microsoft account password:
- On the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After restarting, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Connect to the network if necessary and sign in using the Microsoft account password. ^2^
If another account appears in the lower-left corner, you can alternatively sign in to that account. If it has administrator rights, use it to install Windows updates and review the affected account. ^2^
Recovery fallback
If Safe Mode also rejects the password:
- Hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Try Startup Repair.
- If the problem began recently and a restore point is available, use System Restore. This rolls system settings back; it is not another password reset. A closely matching Windows 10 sign-in case used these Windows Recovery options after the Microsoft account password was reset but remained rejected. ^3^
Avoid repeatedly resetting the Microsoft account password—the completed reset does not reset the separate Windows Hello PIN.
