I am trying to reinstall my 2021 Office Home and Business account to my app and it keeps including 365 which I do not want. How can I just install 2021?

On Mac, the installer may still show Microsoft 365 branding. Office for Mac uses a common installer package, and the license on the Microsoft account determines whether Office Home & Business 2021 is activated.

    Use this reinstall path:

    1. Remove the current Office apps from Applications:
      • Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
      • In Finder > Applications, locate the Office apps.
      • Control-click each app and choose Move to Trash.
    2. Reinstall Office for Mac using the Microsoft installer package:
      • Download the Office 2021 for Mac Installer.
      • Open the package and complete the installation.
    3. Open Word or another Office app and sign in with the same Microsoft account associated with the Office Home & Business 2021 purchase.
    4. If the apps still behave like Microsoft 365 after reinstall, install an earlier Mac build that has been used to resolve this issue:
      • Version 16.114 was recommended in similar cases.
      • After installing, open an Office app, then go to Help > Check for Updates.
      • In Microsoft AutoUpdate, clear Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
    5. If needed, in an Office app go to About > More Info > Refresh License.

If the copy was originally tied to the Microsoft account, reinstalling from the account or the Mac installer package is expected to activate Office 2021 rather than require a Microsoft 365 subscription.

    Hello John Closen,

It sounds like Office is detecting a Microsoft 365 license or old activation information instead of your Office Home & Business 2021 purchase.

First, make sure you did not install Office apps from the Mac App Store, as those versions normally require Microsoft 365. Also, sign in to your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and confirm that Office Home & Business 2021 is listed. If it is, select Install beside the product to reinstall the copy associated with your Office 2021 license.

If Office 2021 is listed but is not recognized, I highly recommend running Microsoft’s License Removal Tool, then restart your Mac and attempt to activate Office again.

Note: The license removal tool only clears saved activation/licensing data on your Mac, it does not delete your purchase or invalidate your license. However, please make sure you still have access to the correct Microsoft account associated with your original Office purchase, as you will need to sign in again to reactivate it after running the tool.

Let me know how it goes!

Please note that support for Office 2021 for Mac ended on October 13, 2026. The apps may continue working, but Microsoft no longer provides security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for this version.
