Unknown charge on credit card statement Can I locate using Transaction Reference Number

I have a recurring charge on my credit card statement. I checked my subscriptions and there is nothing there. I have checked other accounts as well. I tried disputing the charge only to be told the charge is valid and I cannot have it removed from the statement. I had a new credit card issued with a new number and that did not stop the charge from coming through. I do not have the information from the old credit card to investigate it on Microsoft. Is there any way I can use the Transaction Reference Number to find out where this charge is coming from?

Transaction number is relevant to your credit card company, and it is not information kept or shown to Microsoft.

Can you go to your account https://account.live.com Sign in and go to Services & Subscription, do you see anything that matches the charges? If not, click on Order history instead and anything?

Micosoft lists some other scenarios you can explore: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/how-to-investigate-a-billing-charge-from-microsoft-398c5328-364c-d5e4-ea8f-f5ad60562a93

If you find the charges on YOUR account but you don't recognize making those purchase, for your privacy and security, billing matter cannot be discussed here, nor does anyone helping here have access to such data. You will need to contact support to get it handled. On your computer, launch the Get Help app from the start menu, then type in "Billing" as the keyword. On the next page, you can click on "Contact support" button. Then fill out a few more details and you will be directed to the page where you will have the option to chat with a live support agent.

If you cannot locate the charges on your Microsoft account at all, it's possible that your credit card has been compromised. This means unauthorized charges may have been made on someone else's Microsoft account using your credit card. In such a scenario, you should contact your credit card company to open a dispute case. Microsoft is unable to directly investigate issues related to someone else's account if you contact their Billing Support directly. However, once a dispute case is initiated by your credit card company, Microsoft can then respond specifically to those claims through the dispute process with the credit card company. This is the appropriate channel to resolve such issues, as it ensures proper verification and handling of the unauthorized charges.

Microsoft does not document a customer-facing search that identifies a charge solely by its Transaction Reference Number; use Manage your payments → Investigate, then give the reference number and charge details to Microsoft Billing Support if no match appears.

    Investigate the payment

    1. Sign in to Microsoft’s Manage your payments page.
    2. Select Investigate beside the unrecognized charge or payment method.
    3. Enter or match the requested statement details. Microsoft designed this process for unrecognized bank or credit-card charges, including purchases that may have been made by a family member. Possible explanations also include recurring billing, retried declined payments, split orders, preorders, and in-app purchases.^1^
    4. If it finds a transaction, note the associated product/account and use that account to cancel recurring billing.

Because you have already checked subscriptions and your other accounts, there is no need to repeat those checks unless Investigate identifies a specific account you missed.

    If Investigate finds nothing

Contact Microsoft Billing Support through the billing-charge contact page:

    1. Open Contact - Microsoft Support.
    2. Sign in and enter unrecognized recurring billing charge.
    3. Select Get Help, then Contact Support.
    4. Choose Microsoft 365 and Office and the billing/subscription category, then select the available chat or callback option.^2^
    5. Provide:
      • Transaction Reference Number
      • Exact amount and currency
      • Transaction date and statement descriptor
      • Last four digits of the old and replacement cards, if available
      • Dates when the recurring charges began
      • The bank’s dispute outcome

Do not post those details in this public forum. Q&A participants cannot access Microsoft’s billing systems, while Billing Support can handle the information privately.^3^

If Microsoft cannot associate the charge with your accounts

Contact the card issuer’s fraud department, not only its general dispute team. State that the payment information may be compromised and that the recurring charge continued after the card number was replaced. Microsoft specifically advises reporting the card as stolen or compromised because disputing an individual charge alone does not prevent additional charges.^1^

    Ask the issuer to:

    • Investigate how the merchant continued billing the replacement card.
    • Block future recurring charges from that merchant.
    • Reopen or escalate the fraud claim using the Transaction Reference Number.
    • Handle any merchant inquiry through the formal card-network dispute process.
