A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
An Azure for Students subscription can be upgraded to Pay-As-You-Go, but because Microsoft does not explicitly document whether unused student credit survives an early upgrade, obtain written confirmation from Azure billing support before converting if preserving the ₹9,523 balance is essential.^1^
What happens to each item
- Remaining student credit: Not definitively documented for an early Azure for Students conversion. Microsoft explicitly documents retained credit for an upgraded Azure free account, but does not make the same statement for Azure for Students.^1^
Therefore, do not assume the ₹9,523 will remain available after conversion. - Existing resources and configuration: The upgrade converts the subscription rather than requiring a new subscription. Microsoft states that resources disabled after credit exhaustion become enabled after upgrading, which indicates that the existing resources remain in that subscription.^1^ Back up important configuration and export cost/usage data before changing the offer.
- Regional restrictions: Pay-As-You-Go does not mean unrestricted capacity in every region. VM deployments remain subject to:
- total regional vCPU quota;
- VM-family quota in the selected region;
- regional capacity or reserved-region access.
- When charges begin: Do not assume charging waits until the student balance reaches zero after an early upgrade. Once the subscription is converted, usage can be billed under the new offer’s terms; the available official guidance does not confirm that the old student balance is consumed first. By contrast, Microsoft confirms that when an already-exhausted student subscription is upgraded, Pay-As-You-Go charges apply to services being used.^3^
Safest procedure before upgrading
- In the Azure portal, open Help + support → Create a support request.
- Select the issue type for Subscription management or Billing.
- Identify the existing Azure for Students subscription and ask support to confirm in writing:
- whether its remaining credit will survive conversion;
- the exact date Pay-As-You-Go billing will begin;
- whether the subscription ID and deployed resources will remain unchanged;
- whether any student-offer region restrictions will be removed.
- Save that response and export the current usage/balance information.
- If support confirms acceptable terms, go to Subscriptions → your Azure for Students subscription and use Upgrade subscription if displayed. If that action is unavailable, continue through the support request; Azure documents support as the fallback for offer changes that cannot be completed directly.^4^
- Immediately create a budget and billing alerts after conversion. A budget warns about spending but does not stop resources automatically.
If retaining the student credit is more important than removing the current restrictions, the lower-risk option is to keep the student subscription until its credit is nearly exhausted or its eligibility period ends, then upgrade. Azure officially supports upgrading after exhaustion to continue service.^5^
Azure Virtual Desktop checks
Azure Virtual Desktop requires more than an active subscription. Before conversion, verify:
- Subscriptions → your subscription → Resource providers.
- Search for Microsoft.DesktopVirtualization and select Register if necessary.
- Confirm the identity, operating-system, networking, RBAC, and licensing prerequisites.^6^
- Open Quotas → Compute, select the intended region, and verify both regional and VM-family vCPU quota.
- If insufficient, select the quota and submit New Quota Request. This requires Contributor or equivalent access.^2^
For the sample quickstart, Microsoft specifically requires Contributor and User Access Administrator roles, users in the same Microsoft Entra tenant, and quota for Standard_D4ds_v4.^7^
