Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Cancel the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription from the purchasing account; Microsoft will determine and display refund eligibility during cancellation.
1. Join the Family subscription first
To avoid losing Personal subscription benefits while switching:
- Your wife signs in to the Microsoft 365 sharing page using the account that owns the Family subscription.
- She selects Share, sends an invitation to your Microsoft account, and you accept it by selecting Get started and then Join now. Invitations must be accepted within 48 hours.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
- Confirm that the Family subscription appears under Services & subscriptions in your account.
Your Microsoft accounts are not merged; your email and OneDrive files remain private.^2^
2. Cancel Personal and check the refund offer
- Sign in at Microsoft 365 Services & subscriptions using the account that purchased Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Locate Personal and select Manage.
- Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel.
- Complete the prompts. The cancellation page will state whether the subscription qualifies for a refund and provide the next steps.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
If Turn on recurring billing appears instead of Cancel, recurring billing is already disabled and the subscription is scheduled to expire. It does not indicate that a refund has been approved.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365")
Refund eligibility
For subscriptions purchased directly from Microsoft:
- A refund may generally be available within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes first.
- The most recent recurring charge is refundable if cancellation occurs within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account and subscription product.
- Prorated refunds may be available in certain countries or regions.
- Not every cancellation results in a refund; the cancellation process determines eligibility automatically.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
If no refund is issued, access to Personal normally continues until the end of its current billing period.
If Microsoft did not sell the subscription
- Apple App Store or Google Play: Request cancellation and a refund from that store.
- Amazon or another retailer: Contact that retailer directly.
Microsoft’s self-service refund process applies to subscriptions purchased directly from Microsoft.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
If the Personal subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft but the cancellation page fails or does not correctly evaluate eligibility, use Contact Microsoft Support, enter the billing issue, select Get Help, and then Contact Support for an account-specific review.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
