Sign in to the same business mailbox through Outlook on the web, complete any MFA or verification prompt, and then clear New Outlook’s local state if web access succeeds.
1. Test the account in a browser
Open Outlook on the web and sign in with the same work account.
- If sign-in succeeds and mail is available: the mailbox is working, so continue with the New Outlook reset below.
- If sign-in fails: do not reset Outlook yet. Complete any password or MFA prompt. After repeated failed attempts, wait before trying again or select another MFA method; your administrator should inspect the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs if the failure continues.^1^
Testing Outlook on the web distinguishes an account/mailbox problem from a problem limited to the installed application.^2^
2. Clear New Outlook’s local authentication state
- Close New Outlook completely.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
olk.exe --clearLocalState
- Press Enter, reopen New Outlook, and sign in again.
- Complete all browser, consent, or MFA prompts.
This is the New Outlook-specific recovery sequence reported for INTERACTIONREQUIRED authentication failures.^3^
Do not create a classic Outlook profile or use classic Outlook Safe Mode as the next step. New Outlook uses a different architecture and normally has only one Outlook profile.^4^
3. If the error remains, repair New Outlook
Go to:
Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Outlook (new) → More options (…) → Advanced options → Repair
Open Outlook and test again. Repair attempts to fix the app without removing its data.^5^
If Repair does not work, Reset is available on the same page, but it can remove local app data and require account setup again.
Administrator checks
If Outlook on the web also fails, or the user cannot complete MFA:
- Verify the user has the required Microsoft 365/Exchange Online license and that the mailbox is provisioned.
- Review Microsoft Entra ID → Monitoring & health → Sign-in logs, using the timestamp from the error to locate the attempt.
- Check the failure reason and Conditional Access/MFA details.
- If many attempts were made, allow the temporary sign-in protection to clear before retrying.^1^
If this is a third-party IMAP account rather than Microsoft 365, the provider may require an app password. Generate it on the provider’s website and enter that generated password in Outlook instead of the regular account password.^6^
