I manage an email account for my role as secretary to a croquet club and set up outlook on my personal phone so I could respond to club emails. All was fine until a month ago when I started to get locked out and had to constantly verify. this has now become an ongoing issue and I can't resolve it

Reset the club account’s password through Microsoft’s Outlook.com unblock process, then review its recent activity to identify what is repeatedly triggering the unusual-activity lock. Microsoft documents password reset as the required action for an Outlook.com account temporarily blocked because of unusual sign-in activity.^1^

    1. Unlock the account

    1. Open the official Unblock my Outlook.com account page and select its button to begin.
    2. Complete the security-code verification and create a new, unique password.
    3. After access is restored, update the password in every device or application connected to this mailbox. A device still attempting automatic synchronization with the previous password can contribute to repeated sign-in failures.^2^
    4. Sign into Outlook on the web and the Outlook mobile app with the new password.

Do not approve a verification request unless you initiated the sign-in.

    2. Review what triggered the lock

Go to the Microsoft account Security page, select Review activity, and examine the Unusual activity and Recent activity entries. The activity page shows the date, approximate location, device or operating system, access method, and relevant security events from the last 30 days.^3^

    For each relevant entry:

    • If it was your phone or web session: expand it and select This was me when that option is available. Mobile networks can make a legitimate phone sign-in appear to come from another location. New devices, apps, or locations may also trigger additional verification.^4^
    • If it was not you, or you are uncertain: select This wasn’t me under Unusual activity, or Secure your account under Recent activity. Then follow the prompts to change the password and update the account’s security information.^4^
    • Pay particular attention to entries such as Incorrect password entered, Successful sign-in, Automatic sync, Permission given to an application, and Sign-in blocked. These distinguish failed attempts, valid access, and applications synchronizing the mailbox.^3^

    3. If an unfamiliar successful sign-in appears

Treat the account as potentially compromised:

    1. On any Windows PC used with the account, update its antivirus software and run a full malware scan before changing the password again.
    2. Change the password to one not used by the club or by you on any other service.
    3. Check Outlook.com’s connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies for unauthorized changes.^5^
    4. Check the account’s Devices, app access, security contact information, and app passwords; remove anything unrecognized. Signing out everywhere can disconnect remaining sessions, although it may take up to 24 hours.^6^

Because this is a shared organizational mailbox registered as a personal Microsoft account, make sure only authorized club officers possess its password and security-code methods.

    4. If the lock continues

If security-code verification or password reset does not unblock the account, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper. It checks the account details and directs you to the applicable recovery or support route.^7^

If the sign-in screen instead provides a reinstatement link beginning with aka.ms/, submit that form once and wait for the Microsoft Online Safety response; duplicate submissions can delay review.^8^
